KARACHI: Mystery over death of NED couple deepens

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Aug 17: The deaths of a newly-wed couple are still shrouded in mystery as the investigators say they have reason to believe that the groom might have killed his wife before committing suicide, it emerged on Friday.

The couple had got married on Aug 10 and were to host their ‘Valima’ the following day. They were found dead next morning in their North Nazimabad apartment.

While the police are still groping in the dark, some of the investigators involved in the case said that they could steer their probe in the right direction only after receiving the chemical and histopathological report.

Earlier, it was reported that there was evidence about the bride having put up a resistance [to the attacker] and sustained nose and jaw injuries. The groom’s body bore no apparent mark of violence. This may have allowed the investigators to consider their new theory. But they are still clueless about the possible motive for the killing.

Zone West DIG Falak Khursheed declined to comment on the progress of the probe, saying that it would be premature to state any thing at the moment. “Many things will become clear once the chemical reports are available,” he remarked.

The couple, Mohammad Azeem, 28, and Beenish, 27, were class fellows in the NED University before getting married. Four of their class fellows who attended the marriage and remained with the couple till late in the night on the wedding day were questioned by the police over the past few days.

The medico-legal officer who conducted Azeem’s postmortem examination had taken samples of his nails for chemical analysis. Though there were no marks of injury on his body, there were traces of froth discharged from his mouth when the police examined their room, a senior police official said.
