Pakistan, Afghanistan finalize arrangements for Peace Jirga ISLAMABAD, Aug 5 (APP) - Pakistan and Afghanistan have finalized all arrangements for holding the first meeting of Pak-Afghan Peace Jirga on August 9 in Kabul. Rustam Shah Mohmand, the focal person for Pakistani side told APP on Sunday that during the three-day proceedings, 350 members from each side would participate in the Jirga and discuss the problems being faced by the two countries. 12 still trapped after China rail tunnel flood BEIJING, Aug 5, (AFP) - More than 150 rescuers in central China on Sunday searched for 12 workers who remained trapped after a torrent of mud and water engulfed a rail tunnel under construction, state media said. Earlier, rescue teams managed to free 40 of the 52 workers building the tunnel in Hubei province, who were taken to hospital for treatment, the Xinhua news agency reported, citing local work safety officials. Up to four dead in UK civilian plane crash LONDON, Aug 5, (REUTERS) - A civilian plane crashed shortly after taking off from a British airport killing up to four people, an Isle of Wight Airport spokesman said on Sunday. “We think there were four people on the plane,” Isle of Wight Airport manager Richard Steele said. Two US soldiers killed in Iraq BAGHDAD, Aug 5, (AFP) - Another two American soldiers have been killed in Iraq after coming under attack in and around the war-torn capital, the US military said on Sunday. One soldier was killed and two others were wounded during combat operations in western Baghdad on Saturday, the military said. Rains cause bus crashes in Niger, at least 20 dead NIAMEY, Aug 5, (REUTERS) - Torrential rains in Niger caused two bus crashes early on Sunday, killing at least 20 people, witnesses and officials said. At least six passengers in a minibus were swept away by flood water when the bridge they were crossing collapsed near the village of Boubon, 15 km from the capital Niamey. “The search is still going on because there are still people missing,” said Boubon resident Saley Soumana. Taliban threaten more hostage murders, but say ready for talks KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Aug 5, (AFP) - Taliban frustration with the lack of progress in talks on the fate of 21 South Korean hostages turned into fresh threats Sunday, with a spokesman saying more could be murdered at “any time”. But Yousuf Ahmadi also said the Taliban was ready to meet with South Korean negotiators in an attempt to reach agreement on the release of the aid workers kidnapped 17 days ago. “In the past two days there has not been any contact between us and the Koreans or the Kabul administration,” Ahmadi told AFP by telephone. Six police killed in Afghan insurgent attacks KABUL, Aug 5 Taliban insurgents killed two Afghan policeman and wounded three during a pre-dawn firefight in the eastern city of Kunar on Sunday, provincial spokesman Shah Wasi Mangal said. Separately, four Afghan police were killed and three wounded when a rocket-propelled grenade hit their vehicle in the southern province of Logar late on Saturday, said the provincial governor Abdullah Wardak. Seven wounded in northeast India bomb blasts GUWAHATI, India, Aug 5 (AFP) Seven people were wounded in two separate bomb explosions Sunday in India's northeast Assam state in attacks linked to upcoming independence day celebrations, police said. A police spokesman said the first blast happened near a bus terminus in the heart of Sivasagar, about 370 kilometres east of Assam's main city of Guwahati. The second explosion occurred outside a police station at Sonari, about 40 kilometres west of Sivasagar. “Six people, all civilians, were injured in Sonari and one person was wounded in the Sivasagar blast,” Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, deputy inspector general of police in the region, told AFP by telephone. Ten hurt in blast in occupied Kashmir SRINAGAR, Aug 5 (AFP) Militants fighting Indian rule in Kashmir vowed Sunday not to attack civilians in busy places but at the same time police blamed them for a grenade blast that injured 10 people. “Mujahedin will not carry out strikes in crowded places and they will only target troops,” a statement by the region's most powerful group Hizbul Mujahedin said. “The decision has been taken collectively by all the militant outfits,” the statement said. Police blamed them for a grenade attack that injured 10 in the southern town of Awantipora on Sunday. “The civilians were hurt when a grenade hurled at a security force patrol missed its target,” a police spokesman said. Malaysia neither secular nor an Islamic state, PM says KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (AP) Malaysia is neither a secular nor a theocratic state, prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Saturday. The country can be best described as a multiracial nation that practices parliamentary democracy with freedom of religion for all. “We are not a secular state. We are also not a theocratic state like Iran and Pakistan ... but we are a government that is based on parliamentary democracy,” Abdullah told reporters after a speech in the northern state of Penang. Samarra Golden Mosque bombing mastermind killed Baghdad, Aug 5 (Reuters) U.S. forces killed Haitham al-Badri, the al Qaeda leader in Salahuddin province, on Thursday. Badri was accused of masterminding the June 2007 bombing that destroyed the twin minarets of the revered Golden Mosque in Samarra. Meanwhile, 21 bodies were found dumped around Baghdad in the past 24 hours, police said. Separately, two people were killed and four wounded by a mortar attack in Jisr Diyala neighbourhood in southeastern Baghdad, while three Iraqi soldiers died in fighting with insurgents in Jibila district east of Tikrit. 11 killed in Baghdad mortar attack BAGHDAD, Aug 5 (Agencies) Mortar bombs struck a petrol station in eastern Baghdad at dawn on Sunday, killing at least 11 people and wounding 15, Iraqi police said. Nine mortar bombs landed in the area, destroying 13 cars as people lined up for fuel. Several mortar bombs landed at another petrol station in a nearby district, wounding six people, it added. US soldier gets 110 years in rape, killing of Iraqi girl and family WASHINGTON, Aug 5 (AFP) A US soldier was sentenced Saturday to 110 years in jail for raping and killing a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and slaying her family, the army said. “Private First Class Jesse Spielman was sentenced to 110 years in prison with the possibility of parole for his involvement in the March 2006 rape of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and the murders of her and three family members,” an army statement said. Thirty-four trapped in China rail tunnel flood BEIJING, Aug 5 (AFP) Thirty-eight workers were trapped early Sunday when a torrent of mud and water engulfed a rail tunnel under construction in central China, the government said. Rescue teams managed to free four of the workers building the tunnel in Hubei province but 34 remained trapped about 200 metres below ground, it said in a statement.
