CJ case: AG’s resignation accepted

By Iftikhar A. Khan

ISLAMABAD, July 31: President Pervez Musharraf has finally accepted the resignations of Attorney-General of Pakistan Makhdoom Ali Khan and Deputy Attorney-General Tariq Mehmood Khokar.

Official sources told Dawn on Tuesday that the names of Justice (retd) Malik Abdul Qayyum, Ahmar Bilal Soofi and a senior lawyer from Karachi were being considered for the attorney-general’s post.

They said Makhdoom Ali Khan had been accused of pleading the federation’s case against the chief justice in a lacklustre manner. He had also failed to point out flaws in the affidavits filed in the Supreme Court by the government, the sources added.

The Supreme Court Bar Association in a recent meeting warned that it would launch a protest campaign if Malik Qayyum was appointed attorney-general.
