KARACHI: Awareness urged to eradicate polio

KARACHI, July 31: Pakistan needs not only to strengthen its routine vaccination programme but also to improve public awareness about special oral polio vaccination (OPV) campaigns.

This was stated by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Medical Officer for Polio Eradication Programme, Dr Yahya Mostafa, here on Tuesday at a press briefing jointly organised by the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) and the Unicef.

He said that no confirmed case of polio had been reported from the Punjab province during the current year; however, as many as 10 cases had been registered in the other provinces including four in Sindh.

As for Sindh, he said that studies showed that wild polio virus contracted by Sindh-based children this year, originally hailed from other parts of the country.—APP
