Seventy miners trapped in flooded China coal mine BEIJING, July 29, (AFP) - Seventy Chinese miners were trapped Sunday after a coal mine flooded in central Henan province, the state Xinhua news agency reported, saying rescue efforts were under way. The miners were working at the Zhijian coal mine in Shanxian county, about 200 kilometers west of the provincial capital Zhengzhou, when they were trapped early Sunday, a county official told Xinhua. 7 killed in Russian cargo plane crash near Moscow MOSCOW July 29 (APP/AP) - A Russian cargo plane crashed Sunday minutes after taking off from a Moscow airport, killing all seven crew on board, officials said. The An-12 four-engine turboprop belonging to the private Atran carrier went down at 4:22 am local time (0022 GMT), just after taking off from the Domodedovo airport southeast of Moscow, Russian Emergency Situations spokesman Viktor Beltsov said. Taliban set 0730 Monday as last hostage deadline KABUL, July 29, (Reuters) - Taliban leaders set 0730 GMT on Monday as the last deadline for the Korean hostages, a rebel spokesman said on Sunday, and said the group will start killing the captives if Taliban prisoners were not freed by then. “Since the talks between us, the Kabul administration and Korean government have reached deadlock and they are not honest ... so, we will start killing the hostages if they do not start releasing our prisoners by tomorrow at 12 o'clock,” Qari Mohammad Yousuf said. Afghan president meets SKorean envoy over hostages KABUL, July 29, (AFP) - A South Korean envoy on Sunday told Afghan President Hamid Karzai that Seoul would respect “any position” taken by his government over the Taliban's capture of 22 Koreans, Karzai's office said. Baek Jong-Chun, a senior adviser to South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun, met Karzai amid growing concerns for the Christian aid workers captured on July 19 after the Taliban shot dead their leader, a pastor, last week. Palestinians head to Israel border on way to Gaza ISMAILIA, Egypt, July 29 About 100 Palestinians stranded in Egypt since mid-June headed to the Israeli border on Sunday under a deal allowing them to return to Hamas-held Gaza through the Jewish state, a Palestinian official said. The Palestinians were the first of more than 600 stranded Gazans who are expected to return home on Sunday and Monday. Afghan authorities demand release of SKorea women hostages GHAZNI, Afghanistan, July 29 (AFP) Afghan authorities demanded Sunday the release of 16 women among 22 South Korean aid workers held by the Taliban, most of them said to be ill after 11 days in captivity. Storms kill 16 in China BEIJING, July 29 (Reuters) Fierce storms and hail killed 16 people in Hubei province, Xinhua news agency reported Saturday. Top US guns to leave on critical Middle East mission WASHINGTON, July 29 (AFP) Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defence Secretary Robert Gates leave Monday on a vital Middle East mission to seek Arab support to bolster Iraq and to discuss weapons sales with allies. They are also expected to reaffirm US commitment to regional security against possible threats from Iran and its nuclear program. Rice and Gates will make rare joint visits to Egypt and Saudi Arabia before separate trips to other parts of the region. Private helicopter with 5 aboard crashes into reservoir in Urals region MOSCOW, July 29 (APP/AP): A private helicopter with five people on board crashed into a large reservoir in the Ural mountains region of Russia Saturday, killing at least three, the Emergency Situations Ministry reported. Interfax reported the helicopter pilot had just picked up four passengers, including two children, before the crash occurred. Hezbollah leader says U.S. vision for ”new Middle East” shattered BEIRUT, Lebanon, July 29 (AP) Last summer's war in south Lebanon has left the U.S. vision of a “new Middle East” in shambles, and Hezbollah is ready to strike Israel at any time, the guerrilla group's leader said late Saturday. “We will not wait for anyone to defend us. Stunt pilot killed at air show DAYTON, Ohio, July29 (AP) A biplane performing stunts for an air show crashed into a runway Saturday in front of thousands of spectators, killing the pilot, officials said. Jim LeRoy, 46, was in one of two planes making loop-to-loops with smoke trailing as part of the annual air show.
