Iraq praised

BAGHDAD, July 20: The United Nations said on Friday that Iraq’s beleaguered government had made good progress in living up to promises it made international donors in exchange for a deal on development aid.

In May, Iraq met world powers in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to sign the International Compact with Iraq (ICI), a blueprint for economic reform and foreign investment drawn up by the World Bank and the United Nations. A progress report on Iraq’s efforts to live up to its promises of reform and accountability is due to be released, but in a statement released beforehand the UN mission in Iraq praised Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s government.—AFP
