Suicide blast kills 26 in Dera Ismail Khan PESHAWAR, Pakistan, July 15, (AFP) - A suicide bomber killed at least 26 people and wounded 60 more Sunday at a police recruitment centre in the town of Dera Ismail Khan in NWFP in the weekend's third major bomb attack, police said. The attack raised to nearly 70 the death toll from strikes that have rocked Pakistan since Saturday. “It was a suicide attack,” senior police official Sharif Virk told AFP. The death toll was expected to rise as about a dozen of the wounded were in critical condition, said local hospital chief Jahan Zeb Khan. Police superintendent Rab Nawaz, speaking hours after the attack, told AFP that “the death toll has risen to 26.” At least 13 police were among those killed, he said. “The others were recruits and their relatives.” Earlier, in the Swat Valley, located in the same mountainous province, suicide bombers in two explosives-packed cars hit a Pakistan army convoy, killing at least 17 people, including 12 security personnel. 11 security personnel killed, 39 injured in suicide attack: DG ISPR ISLAMABAD, Jul 15 (APP): As many as eleven security personnel were killed and 39 others injured on Sunday when two suicide bombers and an improvised explosive devise simultaneously struck a military convoy passing through Matta in Swat, said Director General ISPR Major General Waheed Arshad. He said 28 of the injured were critical and admitted to hospitals in Peshawar, Mardan and Rawalpindi. The suicide bombers carried out the attack in two blue Suzuki vans. He told a private TV channel, that three civilians were also killed in the terrorist attack. Six houses were also damaged in the attack which was followed by a gunbattle. The DG ISPR said the helicopters were hovering over the area and the convoy was on its way. An APP's correspondent reports from Swat that the incident occurred at Sambat chowk near Matta when two suicide bombers rammed their explosive laden car in military convoy. As a result of the blast several shops and few houses were also destroyed, the official added. About the number of injured, the official said they are around 35 who are rushed to Civil Hospital Matta and Mingora hospitals where emergency has been declared. CJ Iftikhar calls for ensuring rule of law, protecting human rights LAHORE, Pakistan, July 15 (AP) - Pakistan's suspended chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry urged the country's citizens to defend the rule of law and democratic institutions at a rally Sunday in the eastern city of Lahore, saying that they were necessary to uphold human rights. “Democracy strengthens the judiciary,” Chief Justice Iftikhar told a gathering of about 2,000 lawyers and supporters from the opposition parties who braved the heavy rain that lashed Lahore as the speeches began. The chief justice told the lawyers it was imperative to protect the constitution to ensure that human rights were not violated. “The constitution guarantees the protection of basic rights of every citizen,” he said. “The time has come when you should strive for the rule of law.” Earlier, lawyers chanted “Go, Musharraf Go,” and “No to dictatorship,” as CJ Iftikhar arrived at Lahore airport from Islamabad. His caravan covered a distance of 25 kilometers in about 10 hours The authorities had deployed thousands of police to ensure that no untoward incident occurred during the rally. Car bomb in central Baghdad kills 10: police BAGHDAD, July 15, (REUTERS) - A car bomb exploded near a busy shopping square in central Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 10 people, Iraqi police said. Twenty-five people were wounded by the blast, which ripped through shops and restaurants near Hussein Square in the mainly Shi'ite Jadriya district. Two women were among the dead. Eight dead in attacks in eastern Afghanistan KHOST, Afghanistan, July 15, (AFP) - Eight people including five construction workers were killed in a series of weekend attacks in eastern Afghanistan, officials said Sunday. Seven Kurdish border guards killed: Iraqi police BAGHDAD, July 15, (REUTERS) - Seven border guards in Iraq's normally calm northern region of Kurdistan were killed in an ambush on Sunday, police and a local official said, blaming militants linked to al Qaeda for the attack. Fire breaks out in Railways yard KARACHI, July 15 (APP):- A fire broke out at the Railways' City Station yard late on Saturday night. This was stated by an official of the Central Fire on Sunday. He said drums of chemicals, cotton and other goods was stored at the Yard. The official of the Central Fire said that 10 fire tenders were rushed there which brought the fire under control after two hours. 'New' bin Laden video said to call for martyrdom WASHINGTON, July 15 (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden praises martyrdom as a weapon and a path to glory for Muslims in a video that CNN said on Saturday was intercepted before it was to appear on Islamist Web sites. CNN, which noted it could not verify the authenticity of the 40-minute video and had translated it from Arabic into English, said on its Web site there was no indication of where or when the footage had been shot. Typhoon Man-yi hits central Japan, three dead TOKYO, July 15 (Reuters) - Typhoon Man-yi killed three people and injured more than 70 in Japan but weakened to a tropical storm on Sunday as it moved across the country's central region bringing heavy rain, strong winds and landslides. Boxing: Khan overcomes knockdown to clinch Commonwealth title LONDON, July 15 (AFP) -Amir Khan climbed off the canvas to keep his unbeaten record intact and win the Commonwealth lightweight title at the end of eight rounds in London Saturday. He was caught by heavy blows to the head and was sent to the canvas in the sixth round by Scotsman Willie Limond but returned fire to drop the Scotsman in the following round and after more punishment in the eighth, Limond was stopped on the advice of the doctor before the start of the ninth round because of a broken jaw.
