DADU, July 12: Ten breaches which had occurred in the Main Nara Valley drain, Sim Shakh and Dhamrah wah could not be plugged on Thursday and 110 more villages were inundated in Khairpur Nathan Shah and Mehar talukas.
A number of towns, including Mado, Ghozo, Ghalpoor, Rati Jagir and Bahadurpur and about 17,000 acres of land have been flooded.
Two breaches have occurred in the MNV drain in the Ali Sher wah and the Jari Jagir area and water is entering in some parts of Khairpur Nathan Shah between the flood protection embankment and the MNV drain.
The local administration and army personnel have shifted 4,000 to 5,000 people from flood affected areas of Khairpur Nathan Shah taluka to safe places. People are sitting along the embankment and the MNV drain for makeshift arrangements.
Colonel Amjad of the Dadu flood control cell told Dawn that the army had launched a rescue operation in Mehar and Khairpur Nathan Shah. He said that construction work on the ring embankment to protect the Johi town had not been started and, therefore, people would advise to move to safe places as a precautionary measure.
The district administration has set up relief camps at Kari Mori, pumping station, Chhandan Mori in Khairpur Nathan Shah and Koor-ji- Machhi, Gaincha, Sadique Soomro and Khushal Machhi areas in Mehar taluka. A 50-foot breach in the MNV drain and gushing water is heading towards the Johi town.
Water gushing out of the drain has raised the level of the Manchhar Lake to 114.2 RL.
The executive engineer irrigation southern division, Dadu, told Dawn that water of the MNV drain was passing between the area of MNV drain and flood protection embankment and if this flow of water continued, it would hit the Johi town.
He said that water of the drain had reached Khairpur Nathan Shah taluka and it would reach the Johi town in three days.
