RAWALPINDI, July 7: The government has begun investigations into the incident of machinegun firing on Friday from the rooftop of a Rawalpindi house situated along the flight path of planes taking off from the Islamabad airport, sources said.
The police have registered a case under the anti-terrorism act.
Security agencies have not been able to trace the assailants, presumed to be the same people who had rented the house three months ago.
Interrogation of the five persons detained in connection with the case yielded no clues, the source said.
However, the Director-General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Major-General Waheed Arshad, confirmed that an inquiry had been ordered into the incident.
The ISPR chief parried a question about the firing from the submachine gun and the discovery of two anti-aircraft guns at the house.
To a question whether he knew the identity of any of the suspects, he said: “I cannot pinpoint anybody.”
However, he said a number of weapons, including two anti-aircraft guns and a machinegun fitted with a telescope, were found at the house.
A source said the anti-aircraft guns and machinegun were similar to those commonly used in Afghanistan.
