President Musharraf tells Lal Masjid militants to surrender ISLAMABAD, July 7 (AFP) President Pervez Musharraf told militants besieged at Islamabad’s Lal Masjid to surrender Saturday. President Musharraf said that students holed up inside the mosque for the past five days must immediately free women and children allegedly being held as human shields, or face death. “They should not prolong. They should surrender and hand over their weapons, otherwise they risk being killed,” Musharraf told reporters in his first public comment on the confrontation. “Our concern is for children and women and we are showing a lot of patience and restraint.” Fighting intensified at the now bullet-pocked mosque on Saturday. Fierce clashes erupted at lunchtime. A group of hardline MPs said troops stopped them from entering the mosque to negotiate with Abdul Rashid Ghazi. “We have been prevented because the forces of Musharraf are hell-bent on spilling the blood of women and children,” said MP Maulana Shah Abdul Aziz, the leader of the delegation. Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao said the blame lay with the cleric. “He has taken them hostage. They want to come out. So the entire responsibility about the safety of the women and children lies on Abdul Rashid Ghazi,” he told a briefing. Also, police in a pre-dawn swoop seized control of the Jamia Faridia, without a shot being fired, officials said. “Police stormed into Jamia Faridia and arrested dozens of students and shifted them to an unknown place,” a senior security official told AFP. Fighting intensifies at besieged Pakistani mosque ISLAMABAD, July 7 (AFP) - Security forces and militants at Lal Masjid exchanged increasingly intense gunfire on the fifth day of a siege around mid-day Saturday, witnesses and officials said. “It is very intense firing. The government forces have retaliated after gunshots were fired from inside the mosque,” a security official near the mosque said.. “They have unleashed very heavy gunfire on us and we are returning it in defence. One of our students has been shot and he is dead,” Mohammad Shahzad told AFP by telephone from inside the mosque. Heavy automatic weapons fire and hand grenade blasts could be heard in the background as he spoke. Security official said troops were showing restraint because of the presence of children and women in the complex “but they cannot allow the militants inside the mosque to keep targeting security forces.” (Posted @ 13:05 PST)

Lal Masjid: Fresh clashes as siege enters 5th day ISLAMABAD, July 7 (AFP) - Fresh clashes and blasts rocked Islamabad as dozens of trucks carrying troops moved towards Lal Masjid just before daybreak and gunfire continued amid heavy monsoon rain. No calls for pre-dawn prayer were heard over battered mosque's loudspeakers for the second day in a row, indicating life inside the mosque has been severely disrupted by the siege. Simultaneously, authorities forced journalists to further move away from the area but insisted that security forces had not stormed the fortified complex of buildings. “We are not making any advances. This is part of the operation to secure the release of women and children held hostage by the cleric,” a security official said. Militant students lobbed grenades and petrol bombs at security forces, who responded by firing, he added. It was not immediately known if there were any new casualties. (Posted @ 09:50 PST)

We have arms, rations to last one month: Abdul Rashid Ghazi ISLAMABAD, July 7 (AFP) Abdul Rashid Ghazi under siege by security forces at Islamabad’s Lal Masjid told AFP Saturday his followers have enough ammunition and supplies to hold out for another month. “We have enough rations, arms and ammunition to fight for another 25 to 30 days and we will do that, God willing,” Abdul Rashid Ghazi told AFP by telephone. “I would rather die than surrender and be arrested by the government.” Ghazi said they had “planned the distribution of rations that would allow us to last for that many days,” adding, “God is helping us.” ”There are still 1,800 students inside the mosque. Pakistani politicians hope to meet Lal Masjid cleric ISLAMABAD, July 7 (Reuters) A delegation of religious parties including women parliamentarians was waiting to hold talks on Saturday with Lal Masjid cleric Abdul Rashid Ghazi, holed up in the mosque, to persuade him to send out women and children. There was a break in the firing by mid-morning and while the delegation had assembled, nobody had gone in or out of the compound. On Saturday, army soldiers were deployed in place of paramilitary troops at many points around the mosque. Water, gas and power to the mosque have been cut and food was said to be getting scarce. Only a trickle of about 20 came out on Friday, among them a boy who said older students were forcing young ones to stay. Officials say they don't know how many are left in there, though they put the number of hard core militants at 50 to 60. Meanwhile, curfew was briefly lifted in the area in the morning and will be relaxed once again for two hours in the afternoon. (Posted @ 12:05 PST)
