KARACHI, June 25: The Korangi Town Council passed a surplus budget with a total outlay of Rs442.391 million for the financial year 2007-08 on Monday. The budget was presented before the town council by Korangi Town Nazim Arif Khan. The budget documents show estimated receipts as Rs442.391 million against the expenditure of Rs440.035 million, making it a surplus of Rs2.041 million. Addressing a press conference, the town nazim said Rs217.650 million had been earmarked for several development projects in the town.
He said that Rs6.5 million had been allocated for the development and repair of nullahs, Rs79.500 million for buildings and roads, Rs53.050 million for electrical works and Rs36.400 million had been earmarked for playgrounds. He said no new direct tax had been imposed in the budget. However, he added, under the Sindh Local government Ordinance only one per cent tax was levied on immovable property through which the town would earn an income of Rs15 million.
Regarding the garbage collection system in his town, Mr Khan said that Korangi was the only town in Karachi which had its own garbage transfer station and garbage from every union council was collected and transferred to the landfill sites.
He said that a state of emergency had been declared in the town ahead of an expected dust storm and heavy rain. However, he said that 200 jobs of sanitary workers were vacant due to a ban on employment.
Meanwhile, rescue work has been initiated in different towns of the city as monsoon rains continue to play havoc with the lives of the citizens, PPI adds.
The town administration of Gulshan-i-Iqbal set up medical camps in Shahnawaz Shar Goth (UC-12) and Bhittaiabad (UC-13) to provide free medical aid to the people affected by torrential rains.
Three doctors and five paramedics were deployed at the medical camps, established under the supervision of Town Health Officer Dr Imdad. Dr Imdad claimed that 650 people were given free treatment at Shahnawaz Shar Goth camp and 300 people were given free aid at Bhittaiabad camp.

MALIR: Malir Town Nazim Ansar Ahmed along with Federal Minister for Communication Shamim Siddiqui, MPA Hameedul Zafar and Yousuf Munir Shaikh visited different areas of the town to assess rain losses.
The nazim directed the DTO Parks to remove the fallen trees posing the threat to human lives.
JAMSHED: Jamshed Town Nazim Javed Ahmed reviewed the overall rain situation and said the control rooms had been set up where rescue teams equipped with the latest machinery would be present round-the-clock.
