Mixed fortunes for Spanish duo
NOTTINGHAM (England): Briton Tim Henman finally rediscovered some form with a 6-1, 7-6 victory over American Michael Russell in the first round of the Nottingham Open on Tuesday, his first Tour win since February. The 32-year-old former world No 4 took advantage of some ragged play by his 69th ranked opponent to take the first set with ease on the slick grass courts. The second set was much tighter after the players traded service breaks in the first two games as Henman's lack of confidence betrayed him at times. He had enough experience to edge the tiebreak and clinch a morale-boosting victory just six days before the start of Wimbledon where he has been a semi-finalist four times. In other play, dangerous Croatian seventh seed Ivo Karlovic banged down 10 aces on his way to a 6-3, 7-6 defeat of Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka and Frenchman Arnaud Clement, seeded eight, beat Swede Thomas Johansson 7-5, 6-2. Tuesday’s results: First round: Amer Delic (US) beat Justin Gimelstob (US) 6-4, 6-4; 2-Dmitry Tursunov (Russia) beat Robert Kendrick (US) 6-1, 6-4; 4-Jonas Bjorkman (Sweden) beat Richard Bloomfield (Britain) 6-2, 6-0; 6-Paul-Henri Mathieu (France) beat Robby Ginepri (US) 6-3, 6-4; Igor Kunitsyn (Russia) beat 3-Agustin Calleri (Argentina) 7-6 (10-8), 3-6, 6-4; Tim Henman (Britain) beat Michael Russell (US) 6-1, 7-6 (7-5); Lee Hyung-Taik (South Korea) beat Max Mirnyi (Belarus) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4; Jan Vacek (Czech Republic) beat Nicolas Lapentti (Ecuador) 7-6 (7-1), 6-3; Ivo Karlovic (Croatia) beat 7-Stanislas Wawrinka (Switzerland) 6-3, 7-6 (7-3); Juan Martin Del Potro (Argentina) beat Jamie Baker (Britain) 6-4, 6-2; 8-Arnaud Clement (France) beat Thomas Johansson (Sweden) 7-5, 6-2; Teimuraz Gabashvili (Russia) beat Joshua Goodall (Britain) 7-5, 6-3; Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (Spain) beat Alex Bogdanovic (Britain) 6-4, 7-6 (15-13). EASTBOURNE (England): Sixth seeded Israeli Shahar Peer battled through a tough first match at the Eastbourne International on Tuesday against an injured but determined Elena Likhovtseva. Peer won 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in a first-round match that lasted two-and-a-half hours. Eighth and ninth seeds Marion Bartoli and Sybille Bammer enjoyed a much easier day, winning through to the second round with identical scores of 6-2, 6-3 over Tathiana Garbin and Maria Kirilenko respectively. Peer, a quarter-finalist at the Australian Open in January, will now play Japan's Aiko Nakamura who beat Aravane Rezai of France 6-1, 6-4. Tuesday’s results: First round: Mara Santangelo (Italy) beat Ai Sugiyama (Japan) 7-6 (7-3), 6-3; Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland) beat Jill Craybas (US) 6-2, 5-7, 6-0; Katie O'Brien (Britain) beat Vasilisa Bardina (Russia) 7-5, 6-3; 9-Sybille Bammer (Austria) beat Maria Kirilenko (Russia) 6-2, 6-3; 8-Marion Bartoli (France) beat Tathiana Garbin (Italy) 6-2, 6-3; Nathalie Dechy (France) beat Akiko Morigami (Japan) 6-4, 2-6, 6-3; 6-Shahar Peer (Israel) beat Elena Likhovtseva (Russia) 6-2, 5-7, 6-4; Elena Baltacha (Britain) beat Anne Keothavong (Britain) 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5); Aiko Nakamura (Japan) beat Aravane Rezai (France) 6-1, 6-4.—Reuters
