PESHAWAR: ANP concerned over extremism

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, June 20: The provincial president of the Awami National Party, Afrasiab Khattak, has expressed concern over what he called the spillover effect of Talibanisation in Fata and settled areas of the NWFP and urged the people to unite to curb the growing trend of fundamentalism.

He was addressing a party workers’ convention in Hangu district on Wednesday, which was presided over by ANP’s district president Pir Syed Haidar Shah.

A press release issued from the Bacha Khan Markaz here quoted him as saying that the ANP was trying to protect the Pakhtuns’ rights.

ANP’s general secretary Mian Iftikhar Hussain blamed the MMA government for what he called its failure to secure the net hydel profit, adding that MMA leaders had been unable to plead their case effectively. He accused the MMA government of supporting the Musharraf government by voting in favour of the 17th Amendment instead of implementing the Shariah in the province.
