ISLAMABAD, June 20: The government on Wednesday decided that the special federal excise duty (FED) of one per cent replacing the special surcharge duty will be levied on all goods imported from July 1, 2007.

A senior official told Dawn that the special FED would also be collected on goods manufactured locally. Earlier, the proposed one per cent surcharge duty was applicable to importable goods only.

Meanwhile, the official said the Central Board of Revenue (CBR) had directed all field formation to stop collecting of special surcharge duty on imported goods from Thursday.

The decision was taken through an amendment in the Finance Bill 2007 by withdrawing the special surcharge of one per cent on importable goods as it was in violation of the WTO rules.
