PCB chief hints at picking foreign coach

ISLAMABAD, June 12: Pakistan may opt for a foreigner in its extensive hunt for national cricket team’s coach and a suitable candidate will be selected in this regard after personal interviews with the authorities concerned.

Indicating this, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Dr Nasim Ashraf also laid down the criteria for the selection of coach.

“The qualities we require are good man management, high level of motivation and technical know-how (computer literacy) which can enable him (the coach concerned) to analyse the opposing teams’ videos,” Dr Nasim stated on Tuesday, while mentioning the names of foreign coaches Dav Whatmore and Steve Rixon, who, the PCB chief said, were technical and computer literate.

On a query why the coach’s post should not go to a Pakistani, the PCB chairman responded: “There is too much politics. In the culture here in the Sub-continent a foreign coach is more likely to succeed,” while emphasising that local coaches end up having groups amongst the players.

Dr Nasim also revealed that a three-man committee had already narrowed the hunt for a coach to a group of 13 individuals, both Pakistanis and foreigners, adding that they will be further short listed to three, four persons who would be interviewed by the committee members. —APP
