Costly sport equipment gathers rust

By Our Correspondent

GUJRANWALA, June 7: Wrestling and weight lifting equipment of Jinnah health club is gathering rust for the last one year as its building could not be completed at Sheranwala Bagh on GT Road.

Some days back, the lintel of the club’s hall collapsed when the labourers were removing its scaffold.

Reports said the Pakistan Sports Board had awarded the contract to Jhon Alam of Swat at an estimated cost of Rs3.6 million. The construction work should have been completed within three months, but it was done during one and a half years, starting in 2005 and ending in May 2007. The lintel of the 25x50 feet hall was being constructed under the direct supervision of the sports board.

District sports officer Farooq Aziz said the contractor and his supervisor had been produced before DCO Manzer Hayat who ordered registration of a case against them. But they requested the DCO to give them one-month deadline for hall’s construction, Mr Aziz said.

The contractor could not remove debris of the collapsed building despite a lapse of over a week.

When contacted Jhon Alam said he could not remove the debris as labourers were not available. He expressed the hope that construction work would be started shortly. However, the respective SDO was not available for comments.

BAILIFF: A bailiff of district and sessions judge Mazher Husain raided the Kamoki city police station on Thursday and recovered five people who were detained there without registration of any case.

Reports said Qaim Din moved the court, stating that the police picked up his son Rizwan Ahmad from his house and illegally detained him. The bailiff raided the police station, recovered five people, including Rizwan, and produced them before the court.

The judge summoned SI Nawaz, ASI Liaquat and got registered a case against them.

SHOT DEAD: A landlord was shot dead by his rivals at Chak Daden, Ghakkhar Town over an old enmity on Thursday.

Reports said Manzoor Warriach, nephew of Dr Sarfraz Ahmad Warriach of DHQ hospital, was on his way to his outhouse when accused Sohail Cheema and his brothers intercepted him.

They opened fire on him following an exchange of hot words. He died on the spot.

Police have registered a case and are investigating.
