KARACHI, May 20: Sindh Minister for Environment and Alternate Energy, Dr Saghir Ahmed, said here on Sunday that steps were being taken to clean the sewerage system and drains in the city ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.

Steps were also being taken to make the campaign against polythene bags more effective, to avoid hindrances in the flow of sewerage and rainwater.

The minister said that awareness was being created among people to get rid of polythene bags because they were extremely harmful to public health and the sewerage system.

He directed officials to boost liaison with the relevant departments so that the campaign against polythene bags could be made more effective.

The minister also said that a ban on two-stroke rickshaws was also in the works.

Meanwhile, KWSB Additional Vice Chairman Moin Khan inspected ongoing water supply projects in the North Karachi Industrial Area.

He was told that there had been a lot of complaints about water shortage in the North Karachi Industrial Area, and industries were getting water through tankers. But now pipelines worth Rs103 million were being laid to improve the situation, he said.

After the laying of these pipelines the water supply situation in 6-A, B, C and D and 12-A, B, C and D would improve. About 70 per cent work of this new system has been completed while the remaining work should be completed in 45 days.

He directed the chief engineer, Zone-III, to ensure early completion of work.—PPI
