Three more die in Karachi, many shops torched KARACHI, May 13 (PPI) - At least three persons died in Karachi on Sunday; while rioters ransacked and torches some shops and a petrol pump at Water-pump area of Gulberg. According to reports, Landhi, Banaras, Qasba and Water Pump area witnessed violent clashes. It was reported that a man died in Landhi area in alleged police firing, while two other men died in Qasba and Peerabad area. Armed men also ransacked shops of construction material at Water Pump bus stop in Gulberg area and later torched them. They also damaged a petrol pump. Police and Rangers rushed to the area and control the situation. (Posted @ 22:16 PST) Pakistani paramilitary told to shoot rioters: Government KARACHI, May 13,(REUTERS) - The Pakistani government authorised paramilitary troops on Sunday to shoot anyone involved in serious violence in the city of Karachi, where 36 people have been killed over the past two days, an official said. “We have increased the presence of Rangers in the city and have told them to arrest or shoot anyone involved in violence and riots threatening life or property,” Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah told Reuters. (Posted @ 20:04 PST) Death toll from political unrest in Karachi rises to more than 40 KARACHI, May 13 (AP/Agencies) - The death toll from the worst political violence in years in Karachi during the last 48 hours rose to more than 40 after hospitals received more bodies, hospital officials said Sunday. A political crisis threatening President Gen. Pervez Musharraf exploded into violence on Saturday when pro-government gunmen and opposition activists clashed in Karachi, Pakistan's main sea port and commercial hub. At least 28 people were reported killed in the violence. But the death toll rose to 37 after more dead bodies arrived in four Karachi hospitals and a police officer was killed by a mob late Saturday, police and hospital officials said. Karachi was largely peaceful early Sunday but a group of about 100 people had blocked a street with burning tires and stones in Jamshed Quarters neighborhood, an Associated Press reporter saw. Traffic was thin on many Karachi roads and most shops and restaurants, which are usually busy with people eating breakfast in the early morning, were closed, the reporter said. Schools, Colleges closed Monday, Official mourning Karachi, May 13 (PPI) - Sindh government has decided to observe official mourning Monday (May 14) as official mourning for those killed in violence on Saturday, a private Tv channel reported. It also said that the government has imposed Section 144 through out Karachi. Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim Sunday announced holiday for all educational institutes of Karachi on Monday. He directed Sindh Secretary Education that due to present situation of Karachi all educational institutes of Karachi should be closed. The fighting erupted in Afghanistan's Paktia province when Pakistani troops fired on Afghan border guards building a security post on the disputed frontier, provincial governor Rahmatullah Rahmat told AFP. Ahmadinejad calls for US forces to leave Gulf ABU DHABI, May 13, (REUTERS) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for an end to the presence of U.S. troops in the Gulf during a visit to the U.S.-allied United Arab Emirates on Sunday, an Iranian news agency reported. “With each other's help, we can turn the Persian Gulf to the gulf of peace and friendship,” the semi-official Mehr news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying in a meeting with his UAE counterpart Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan. Eleven people were wounded after loyalists of the two rival factions traded fire on the coast road in the Gaza City, and two of them subsequently died in hospital, medical sources said. Masked gunmen earlier killed a local chief in the Fatah-linked Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and his driver in the northern Gaza Strip in an ambush that the radical faction blamed on Hamas rivals. Hamas denied any responsibility. Separately, in Nangarhar province, one policeman was killed and two were injured when a roadside bomb exploded next to a police vehicle on Sunday, said Mohammad Akrem, the chief of Bati Kot district. Fatah militant leader shot in Gaza GAZA CITY, May 13, 2007 (AFP) - A local chief in the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed faction linked to the Fatah movement, was shot and injured by masked gunmen in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, medical sources said. Baha Abu Jarab, 32, who heads the Brigades in his home town of Beit Lahiya was shot on his way home in the northern Gaza Strip, said Fatah spokesman Tawfiq Abu Khossa, blaming rival Hamas gunmen for the attack. Medical sources said he sustained several gunshot wounds to the body and was in a serious condition. The small ferry carrying 67 passengers sank after it collided with a double-decker boat carrying about 50 passengers and cargo on Twantay canal Friday night, said a police officer who insisted on anonymity for fear of disclosing official information without authorization. Five bodies have been recovered from the canal, 34 kilometers (20 miles) southwest of downtown Yangon, while rescue teams continued to search for the missing four, the police officer at the Twantay police station said. ''This is the destiny of traitors,'' the gunmen yelled as they shot their victims in Baqouba, a mostly Sunni city about 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad, police and witnesses said. Indonesia requires that the results of a second test are positive before confirming any human bird flu fatality. The latest death, if confirmed, would push the country's human bird flu death toll to 76, the world's highest. The woman, 26, who was four months pregnant with her second child, died at a hospital in Medan, North Sumatra, early on Sunday, the official said. Police and paramilitary troops attacked the hideout where more than 700 rebels were present late Saturday night. “The gunbattle lasted more than four hours. Five rebels were killed.
