Producer prices up

SHANGHAI, May 11: China’s factory-gate prices in April rose 2.9 per cent from a year earlier as higher metals and oil products prices lifted the cost of goods for manufacturers, the government said on Friday.

The increase compared to a 2.7 per cent rise in March and a rise of 2.9 per cent in the first quarter, the National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement.

The monthly figures fell in line with analysts estimates for an increase of between 2.8 to 3.0 per cent.

China’s consumer price index, the key measure of inflation, rose 2.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2007 from a year earlier, and was up 3.3 per cent in March alone.—AFP
