KARACHI: Special children forget disability on their day

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 6: Children are considered to be the very reason for their parents’ delight. However, the joy is marred by a concern, when children appear to have a disability of some sort. It is a challenge no less for teachers of such children as well to impart knowledge to them in a manner that they do not feel derived in any field of life.

The Department of Special Education, University of Karachi, has been training teachers in a manner that they can communicate and teach physically or mentally challenged kids.

A programme was organised by the department in order to mark the Special Children’s Day. Students of Absa School, Horizon School, Darul Khushnood and IdaReio Special School participated in various programmes organised for the day.

Dressed in colourful outfits, most of them looked cheerful and excited about the event. Looking at them performing various tableau, one sensed no disability overcoming their talent whatsoever.

KU Vice-Chancellor Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, speaking on the occasion, said: “In European countries, from a very young age people are encouraged and motivated to serve society and mankind. This is why it is part of their vacations to take such projects like looking after and helping special children,” he added.

He also pointed out that the society was in dire need to transform its norm towards the ‘special’ young ones.

“These kids don’t deserve pity, in fact they need love and attention of the people around them,” he opined.

Dr Shagufta Shahzadi, head of the department, at the end of the programme thanked the participants for their lively performances.
