KARACHI, April 23: Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) were heading for a certain defeat after Sindh’s paceman Tanvir Ahmed claimed a first-innings hat-trick on an eventful third day of the Pentangular Cup match at the National Stadium here on Monday.

KRL were tottering at 60 for four in their second innings at stumps after being asked to chase a formidable target of 336.

A total of 19 wickets fell during the day’s play after KRL resumed their first innings at 193 for five. But their innings came to an end with the addition of just 16 runs.

Tanvir dismissed Jaffar Nazir and Shahzad Butt with the last two deliveries of his sixth over before trapping Zulfiqar Jan with the first ball of his next to complete the hat-trick. He finished with four for 33 while off-spinner Tahir Khan captured three for 37.

Having obtained a big lead of 170 on the first innings, Sindh managed only 165 in their second essay with Fahad Iqbal contributing 57. Paceman Mohammad Irshad took four for 37.

On Sunday, a splendid seventh-wicket partnership of 168 between Rizwan Ahmed and Tanvir had guided Sindh to a healthy position.Rizwan, who was overnight 85, scored 125 – which included 12 fours and one six – while Tanvir struck 16 boundaries in scoring a career-best 90 as Sindh added 98 to Saturday’s tally of 281 for seven.

Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal claimed all three wickets to fall on Sunday to finish with fine figures of six for 92 in 38.1 overs.
