ECC clears several issues related to gas pipeline project ISLAMABAD, April 10 (PPI) The Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet (ECC) Tuesday cleared several issues related to Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project and increased intervention price of gram by 100 rupees per forty kilogram. The meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz approved gas sharing arrangement under which Iran would provide 2.1 billion cubic feet of gas per day in the first phase with equal share for Pakistan and India. In the second phase, Iran would supply 3.2 billion cubic feet of gas per day. Out of the total 5.3 billion cubic feet to be received from Iran, Pakistan would get 2.1 and India 3.2 billion cubic feet of gas per day. Replying to questions Secretary Petroleum said if everything goes well, the construction work would begin next year and completed in about four years, and gas delivery may begin in 2012. Ceasefire working in major areas of Kurram Agency ISLAMABAD, April 10 (APP) Political Agent Kurram Agency Sahibzada Muhammad Anis said that ceasefire is working in major area of the Agency and the situation is moving fast towards normalcy. Speaking in a PTV programme he said, firing incidents are taking place in the suburbs of major towns. He said the local tribal chiefs are being involved in peace efforts and army is being deployed only in areas where the peace is not possible through local efforts. To a question he said the situation deteriorated due to handful anti-peace elements and hoped the situation would come under control soon. To another question he said, the number of casualties occurred so far in the area is 21 while 53 were wounded. (Posted @ 13:44 PST) 28 killed, 65 injured in 3 major clashes in Baghdad BAGHDAD, April 10 (AP) - A female suicide bomber wearing a black abaya detonated her explosives belt in a crowd of about 200 police recruits at the main gate of the Muqdadiyah police station northeast of Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least 16 people and wounding 33 others, police and hospital officials said. Meanwhile, U.S. and Iraqi army forces were engaged in fierce fighting with gunmen in Baghdad’s neighbourhoods of Fadhil and Sheik Omar, police and witnesses said. An American helicopter involved in the battle came under ground fire but was not shot down, a senior U.S. military official said. Police said six people, including an Iraqi soldier, were killed and 21 wounded. Repeated artillery fire rang out across Baghdad at midday Tuesday, but the target was unclear. In another incident, a parked car bomb exploded at a checkpoint near Baghdad University, killing at least six people and wounding 11, police said. The bomb was packed into a yellow taxi cab near campus, and all of those hurt were civilians, police said. Also Tuesday, the U.S. military announced the deaths of four U.S. soldiers _ three killed by a roadside bomb in Baghdad and another killed in combat in western Anbar province. (Posted @ 21:08 PST) 34 drown trying to reach Yemen GENEVA, April 10 (AFP) - At least 34 persons who were being smuggled from Somalia were killed after traffickers forced them overboard off the coast of Yemen, the UNHCR said Tuesday. Witnesses and survivors said two boats that were offloading passengers near shore moved back out to sea after Yemeni security forces fired at them. Twenty-two people from the boats drowned, UNHCR spokesman said. Another 12 Somalis and Ethiopians from a third boat died when they were forced overboard far from the shoreline, he added. Passengers said they were beaten throughout the crossing and that at least two Ethiopian men had jumped into the shark-infested Gulf of Aden because they were unable to endure the beatings. A total of 635 Somalis and Ethiopians in six other boats are believed to have reached the shore safely between Friday and Sunday. (Posted @ 19:16 PST) Pakistan blocks radical mosque's website, radio station ISLAMABAD, April 10, 2007 (AFP) -The Pakistani government said Tuesday it had blocked the website and radio station of a radical mosque that has launched a morality campaign in the heart of the capital. “We have blocked the website of Lal Masjid and also blocked the radio station,” Deputy Information Minister Tariq Azeem told AFP. “We will block anything that promotes religious hatred, calls for suicide attacks -- this cannot be tolerated,” he added. “The law says that no such activity can be allowed. Afghanistan: 6 Taliban, 2 Afghan soldiers killed KABUL, April 10 (AP) - U.S.-led coalition and Afghan troops clashed with suspected Taliban militants in Sangin district of Helmand province and called in an airstrike that left four militants dead, the coalition said Tuesday. “As Taliban fighters began to flee, coalition aircraft engaged and killed four Taliban fighters who were attempting to escape,” the coalition said. In neighboring Kandahar, Taliban militants clashed with border police on Tuesday, leaving two militants dead and one officer wounded, said border security police Gen. Abdul Raziq. The bodies of nine people were found shot in different districts of Baghdad. The bodies of three people were found with bullet wounds in Mosul, while the bodies of two people were found shot and tortured in Rashad, a town near Kirkuk, police said. Separately, Baisa Khel police intercepted a truck Tuesday and recovered seven rockets, four plastic bombs and a rocket launcher from the hidden cavities of vehicle. Police arrested seven persons. Talking to Governor Balochistan Owais Ahmed Ghani he said arrangements for the construction of new Gwadar airport would soon be finalized with the Chinese government, while Thai government was now undertaking the construction of fourth port in Pakistan at Sonmiani, to be developed as a port city bearing the name Alladin Cove. In addition, the new city would also be a tourist resort and an industrial hub. Balochistan had immense potential in tourism, fisheries, livestock, agriculture, oil and gas, minerals and mining sectors and serious efforts were being made to exploit these resources., he added. The convoy was returning to its base in the Tirin Kot district from an operation in a nearby village when dozens of Taliban opened fire, defence ministry spokesman General Mohammad Zahir Azimi said. Taliban also sustained casualties but his ministry had no figures, the general said. Two Afghan troops, a policeman and a rebel were killed in separate clashes on Monday, officials said. Pakistan committed to promote peace and stability in region: PM Aziz ISLAMABAD, April 10 (APP) Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Tuesday said Pakistan is fully committed to promoting peace and stability in the region and the world at large and vowed that it does not harbour aggressive designs against any country. Addressing the annual convocation of Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Science (PIEAS) here at Nilore, the Prime Minister reiterating Pakistan's commitment for peace and stability in the region said: “we do not harbour aggressive designs against any country, nor do we wish to engage in an arms race.” Aziz said: “our defence doctrine is based on minimum credible deterrence and we favour a regional strategic restraint regime in strategic and conventional weapons.” (Posted @ 13:20 PST) Ten people killed in building collapse in southwestern China SHANGHAI, China, April 10 (APP/AP) Brick facades collapsed onto crowds in a busy commercial street in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu, killing at least 10 people, state media and a city spokeswoman said Tuesday.
