KARACHI: Support system for street children urged

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, March 24: The final session of a three-day capacity building workshop on the relationship of policemen with street children in the metropolis concluded here on Saturday.

The workshop was jointly organised by the Capital City Police Karachi and Azad Foundation at the ADRC police station in which some 60 police officers participated.

Sanaullah Abbasi SSP, ADIGP/Establishment, highlighted the previously discussed points while sharing his experiences. He stressed the need for collaboration between police, NGOs and the masses to take remedial steps for the protection of the neglected segment of the society with special reference to the street living children.

He said such awareness raising sessions could play a vital role to curb the evils which could spawn serious social problems. Mr Abbasi also discussed the Police Order and mentioned how a child should be treated if he/she was found in real or perceived conflict with law.

He also said through this process a positive image of police could be highlighted and child friendly laws could be implemented in better ways.

Naveed Hassan Khan of the Azad Foundation emphasised on establishing a social support system for street children so that a better future could be provided to them.

Besides, he also spoke about crime prevention so that a child could be prevented before committing a crime and remedies could be made to tackle the causes behind crimes committed by the children.

Arfa Zainab, project coordinator of Dastak Rehabilitation Centre, highlighted the services of the centre and stressed the need for channeling the available resources for the betterment of street children. Ms Farah Muzammil, a law expert, discussed about the prevailing laws related to child rights.
