Mother, five children die in rain-related incident

KHAAR, March 12: A woman and her five children were killed while the family head was injured when roof of the room they were sleeping in collapsed due to heavy rain in the Kharari village of Mamond tehsil on Monday.

Officials and residents of the area said that Ghulam Jan’s family was sleeping in the room which caved in due to heavy rain, killing his wife and five children. Ghulam Jan himself was lightly wounded in the incident.

Talking to journalists, Ghulam Jan said he was sleeping in the room with his children and wife when the roof of the room collapsed early in the morning, burying all of them. He said his son, Abdul Mohammad, who was sleeping in the other room, fired Kalashnikov shots into the air to attract villagers to the incident.

Soon after the incident the villagers rushed to the house and mounted a rescue operation. Jan said after a long struggle all the bodies were retrieved from the wreckage.

The victims have been identified as Aisha Bibi (2), Rafiullah (6), Fazle Wahid (8), Samiullah (10) and Taila Bibi (12) and Ghulam Jan’s wife (40).

Nawagai Assistant Political Agent Mohammad Jamil and other political officials reached the village and announced compensation for the family.

In another incident in the same village, Rehmatullah (13) was wounded when a room in his house collapsed due to rain. He was taken to the Agency Headquarters Hospital.
