KARACHI: SHC asks KBCA to inform it of action: Illegal structures

KARACHI, March 2: The Sindh High Court asked the Karachi Building Control Authority to apprise it of the action taken or proposed to be taken against the builders and developers, architects and engineers and its own officials involved in the construction of Glass Towers and other illegal structures.
The officiating chief controller of buildings Rauf Akhtar Farooqui informed a division bench consisting of Justices Mushir Alam and Yasmin Abbasy that stern action against the delinquents was in the offing and the KBCA was taking measures to improve its working.
The bench told him that much of its time was consumed in attending to petty issues, which could better be resolved at the departmental level. It hoped that the chief controller would live up to his commitment and inform the court of the outcome of its inquiry through the member of its inspection team.
Appearing for the petitioner, Shehri-Citizens for Better Environment, Advocate Naimur Rahman said a number of documents in respect of matter were available with the parties and the file may be reconstituted for appropriate proceedings.
The bench asked him to supply the documents available with his client to the KBCA so that the file could be reconstituted in accordance with the law. The petitioner said the Glass Towers complex on Clifton Road had been built in gross violation of the building and town planning rules and regulations. It could and should not have been regularised and the only way out was its demolition.
