KARACHI: ATC asks SHC for guidelines: President murder conspiracy case
KARACHI, March 1: The Anti-terrorism Court, Karachi, headed by Ghulam Ali A. Samtio on Thursday sought guidelines from Sindh High Court for the retrial of two alleged members of the banned Harkatul Mujahideen Alami activists acquitted by another ATC in a case pertaining to the alleged plot to assassinate President Pervez Musharraf.
On October 18, 2003, the ATC had sentenced Harkat activists Mohammad Imran, Mohammad Hanif and Ashraf to 10-year imprisonment after finding them guilty of conspiracy to assassinate President Musharaf. However, co-accused Rangers Inspector Waseem Akhtar & Sharib Arsalan Farooqui were acquitted as trial court gave them benefit of doubt.
The prosecution represented by Special Public Prosecutors, Naimat Ali Randhawa & Mazhar Qayum sought indictment and retrial of acquitted co-accused in case along with other alleged members of group contending SHC set aside entire order of ATC and ordered retrial from stage to frame charge.
According to prosecution, planned to assassinate President Musharaf and fitted explosives in a vehicle at Sharea Faisal, Karachi, to blow his convoy to pass on April 24, 2002 but scheme failed. ATC Judge fixed March 15 for next hearing.—PPI
