By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Feb 22: The Sindh High Court on Thursday issued a notice to the advocate-general for Friday in a petition moved by PPP MNA Dr Azra Pechuho for provision of armed security guards.

The petitioner, who is sister of former federal minister Asif Ali Zardari, submitted through Advocate Farooq H. Naek that there was a threat to her life. She pointed out that she had came under an armed attack during the February 10 by-election in the provincial constituency PS-71 and that she had escaped (death or injury) only because she was sitting in a bullet-proof car. The petition was taken up by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed and Justice Faisal Arab.

ACQUITTAL: The Sindh High Court accepted an accountability court convict’s appeal and ordered his acquittal.

Former provincial minister Waryam Faqeer filed an appeal against his conviction by an accountability court for the ownership and possession of assets unaccounted for by known sources of his income.

A reference was filed by the National Accountability Bureau in 2001 and the accused was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment in May 2002. He was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs2 million besides forfeiting his property. An appellate bench consisting of Justices Rehmat Hussain Jafferi and Munib Ahmed Khan allowed the appeal and set aside the conviction and penalties.
