KARACHI, Feb 16: The general secretary of the Karachi University Teachers’ Society (KUTS) and an associate professor at the KU’s Department of Mass Communication, Prof Sarwar Naseem, died of cardiac arrest on Thursday night.
Prof Naseem was also the president of the Federation of All Pakistan Academic Staff Universities Association (FAPUASA).
He was laid to rest after Friday prayers in the University graveyard. Prof Naseem’s funeral was attended by KU vice -chancellor Prof Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqi, pro-vice-chancellor Dr Ikhlaq Ahmed, KU Registrar Prof Mohammad Raees Alvi, KUTS president Dr Suhail Barkati, former vice-chancellors Dr Syed Irtifaq Ali, Dr Abdul Wahab, former VC FAUUST Prof Dr. Iqbal Mohsin, SPLA president Prof Riaz Ahsan, MPA Nasrullah Shaji and a number of journalists and his students.
In his condolence message, Dr Pirzada expressing heartfelt grief over the sudden demise of Prof Sarwar Naseem said it was an irreparable loss for the university. He said services of the late professor would be remembered for a long time and prayed that the departed soul may rest in peace.
KUTS president Dr Suhail Barkati paying rich tribute to Prof Naseem said it was a great loss for the KUTS. He announced that a condolence meeting would be held at KU Arts Auditorium on Saturday at 11am.
Meanwhile, the KU registrar announced that meeting of the KU Syndicate scheduled on Saturday had been cancelled. New date would be announced later.
Born on July 22, 1959, Prof Naseem worked in different newspapers including Morning News, Jang, Jasarat after his MA in Journalism before joining the University of Karachi’s (KU) Mass Communication department in 1990.—PPI
