KARACHI, Feb 1: A one-day directors-general conference, organised by the National Accountability Bureau, was held here on Thursday under the chairmanship of NAB Chairman Lt-Gen (Retd) Shahid Aziz.

The 13th DG conference was attended by the deputy chairman of NAB, regional directors-general of Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, Peshawar and Rawalpindi, DG HR and Finance, DG A&P and other officers.

The main focus of the conference was to discuss and finalise awareness and prevention strategy of NAB and its implementation plans with social emphasis on plan for year 2007.

The NAB chairman underlined the need for rooting out the menaces of corruption from society through a three-pronged approach of awareness, prevention and enforcement.

He asked the participants to adopt a proactive awareness campaign through close interaction with all stakeholders, particularly the media and public bodies.He directed them to involve all stakeholders of society to curb this menace through effective preventive measures and extend assistance to all concerned and extend assistance to review rules to eliminate the incidence of corruption.

The chairman spelled out objectives for the year 2007 and directed officials to carry out statistical profiling of all government departments in terms of corruption vulnerabilities. Among other areas, certain departments/activities were prioritised to be focused during year 2007.

These focus areas were prioritised keeping in view their impact on the public and financial impact on the national exchequer. The prioritised areas include the housing sector, the health sector, the PTA and ICAP.

He further told officials to reinvigorate the implementation committee on the national anti-corruption strategy (NACS) in order to expedite the implementation of NACS at the national level. The moot also discussed the performance of the NAB during year 2006.

The chairman expressed his satisfaction on the overall performance and stressed the need for continued efforts to achieve the goals.—APP
