Musharraf, King Abdullah discuss wide ranging talks Makkah, Jan 21 (PPI) President General Pervez Musharraf and Saudi King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz has held wide ranging talks covering bilateral, regional and international issues of the mutual concern with special emphasize on combine efforts by the Muslim countries to resolve the Palestinian crises for the peace of the region and the world. The two leaders held an hour long one-to-one meeting. Earlier, delegation level talks were held between the two sides. Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri assisted the President. Cricket-South Africa tail wags after Asif blitz PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa, Jan 21 (Reuters) – South Africa's tail wagged effectively after Mohammad Asif took five wickets for Pakistan on the third day of the second test on Sunday. The home team totalled 331 in their second innings before Pakistan, chasing 191 to win, reached the close on eight for not out. Asif bowled with pace and accuracy to take five for 76 from 38 overs. ‘Pakistani circles’ behind Afghan violence: Karzai KABUL, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai said on Sunday "certain Pakistani circles" were protecting insurgents fighting in Afghanistan, and added drugs and corruption in his government were contributing to the violence. Karzai, speaking at the opening of a new session of the Afghan parliament, said the danger from the insurgency and drugs would intensify in the coming year, and he called on people to rally to the defence of the nation. 25 US soldiers killed in western Iraq BAGHDAD, Jan 21, (AFP) - At least 25 US troops have been killed across Iraq in one of the most lethal days for the American forces since the US-led invasion began in 2003, according to military statistics issued Sunday. In a statement, the US military said four soldiers and a Marine were killed in the violent Anbar province while another soldier died northeast of Baghdad in a roadside bomb attack. All the deaths occurred on Saturday. The military had earlier reported the deaths of 19 other service members across Iraq on Saturday, including 12 killed in a helicopter crash northeast of Baghdad. Tigers stage suicide attack against foreign-operated ship COLOMBO, Jan 21, (AFP) - Tiger rebels rammed an explosives-laden boat against a private merchant vessel operated by foreign crew in Sri Lanka's northern waters Sunday, sparking a land, sea and air battle, the navy said. The MV City of Liverpool, which is chartered by a Sri Lankan company, was taking in water after the attack and was being towed to the port of Kankesanthurai in the Jaffna peninsula, a navy spokesman said. He said one Tiger suicide craft exploded against the ship, damaging the hull and one crew member was wounded. Two soldiers on board the ship for security fired at the rebels. The merchant vessel was unloading wheat flour for the half a million civilians living under virtual siege conditions since the only land access to the Jaffna peninsula was cut off due to fighting since August. Strong earthquake hits off Indonesia's Sulawesi JAKARTA, Jan 21 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.3 occurred on Sunday in the Molucca Sea, east of the northern tip of Indonesia's Sulawesi island, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its website. Two policemen wounded in Pakistan bomb blast WANA, Pakistan, Jan 21, (AFP) - Two policemen were wounded Sunday when a remote-controlled bomb exploded near a police van in northwestern Pakistan bordering Afghanistan, police said. The roadside bomb went off during a patrol by a police emergency squad in the town of Tank, near the rugged tribal region of South Waziristan, local police officer Atiq Wazir told AFP. London urged to work with Washington to find alternatives to Guantanamo LONDON, Jan 21 (AFP) - British lawmakers urged their government to work with the US administration to find alternatives to the terrorist prison camp in Guantanamo Bay so that it could be closed as soon as possible. The Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee, some of whose members visited the camp last September, said states had a right to defend themselves and a new strategy for dealing with the suspects was needed before it could close.
