BAHAWALPUR, Jan 20: A pair of red deer and llama has been purchased from Holland for the local zoo. This was stated by curator Salim Akhtar Langah at a press briefing on Saturday. Mr Langah said the deer cost about Rs350,000 and llama Rs480,000.

He said the process to purchase an elephant costing about Rs6.5 million from Sudan was in progress. It may be recalled that after the death of 90-year-old elephant about four years ago, the zoo was without the big animal and the visitors had been deprived of elephant ride which had been an interesting and permanent feature for the visitors.

The curator briefed journalists about the renovation plan of the zoo and told them that about Rs40 million were utilised on the construction of three new cages for wolves and hyena, tiger, deer, blue bull, aviary and aquarium.

He said there were seven lions and three lionesses in the zoo. Around 62 cubs were sold and 37 were gifted to other wildlife parks of the country of the 117 cubs born here during the last 24 years, he added.

LOAD SHEDDING: People have urged the Multan Electric Supply Company (Mepco) not to resort to loadshedding during Muharram.

The demand was voiced by Khwaja Mureed Abbas during a meeting of the district peace committee at the Circuit House here.

He expressed concern over the loosely hanging wires on routes of alam and tazia processions which posed a threat to the participants and demanded either their immediate removal or replacement.

He demanded repair of Shahi Bazaar road which was dug up recently to lay a pipeline.

District nazim Tariq Cheema and committee members also spoke on the occasion.
