KARACHI: 1,800 phones, 365 vehicles taken away in fortnight

KARACHI, Jan 17: Over 1,800 cellular phones and 365 vehicles were taken away from different areas of the city during the first 15 days of this year.
The figures collated by Dawn showed that 750 mobile phones were snatched at gunpoint and 1,055 were stolen across the city.
Gulshan-i-Iqbal was haven for mobile phone snatchers, who deprived 37 people of their cellphones at gunpoint. The vicinity also stood first for mobile phone theft cases, as 46 phones were stolen during the fortnight.
Neighbouring Gulistan-i-Jauhar stood next as 30 mobiles were snatched and 34 were stolen from different parts of the densely populated locality.
In Taimuria police limits, 24 cellular phones were snatched at gunpoint and 13 others were stolen. Robbers snatched 23 mobile phones and stole 27 others in Kharadar area. In Korangi police precincts, 20 cellular sets were snatched at gunpoint and 39 were stolen.
Twenty mobile phones were snatched at gunpoint in the police limits of Shah Faisal Colony, 19 in Baghdadi, 18 each in Liaquatabd, Preedy and North Nazimabad, 16 each in Azizabad, Hyderi Market and Joharabad, 15 each in Garden, Nazimabad and Sohrab Goth, 14 each in Clifton, Ferozabad and Jamshed Quarters, 13 each in Defence, Khawaja Ajmair Nagri and Soldier Bazaar, 12 each in Gulberg, Orangi and Brigade, and 10 each in Saudabad, Aziz Bhatti and Bahadurabad.
Besides, 35 cellular phones were stolen in Orangi, 28 in Site, 27 each in Kharadar and Preedy, 25 in Defence, 23 each in Ferozabad, Landhi, North Nazimabad and Sohrab Goth, 22 in Garden, 20 each in Nazimabad, Zaman Town and New Karachi, 18 each in Brigade, Quaidabad, Malir City and Saddar, 16 each in Baghdadi, Liaquatabad, Shah Faisal Colony, Sharea Faisal and Clifton, 14 in Gulberg, 13 each in Airport, Mithadar and Artillery Maidan, 12 each in Azizabad, Bahadurabad, Bilal Colony, Malir Cantonment, Mehmoodabad, Shershah and Steel Town, 11 each in Aziz Bhatti, Boat Basin, Chakiwara, Darakhshan and Joharabad, and 10 each in New Town, Pirabad and Sir Syed Town.
Of 141 automobiles taken away during the fortnight, 46 were snatched at gunpoint and 95 were stolen across the city.
Gulshan-i-Iqbal again stood first in the incidence of carjacking as five cars were snatched at gunpoint and an equal number of cars were stolen in the vicinity.
Robbers snatched 75 bikes in different parts of the city and 149 bikes were stolen in the city during the past 15 days.
Meanwhile, police claimed recovery of 48 cars and 61 bikes during the same period.
