PESHAWAR, Jan 12: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has said that one million Afghans have been registered in the NWFP, two-thirds of the total number of Afghans living in the province.
In a press release issued here on Friday, the UN agency said that the landmark figure would push the total number of the Afghans registered in Pakistan 1.5 million this weekend.
The registration exercise, which started on October 15, across the country, will end on Jan 19.
The National Database Registration Authority with the financial assistance of the UNHCR is conducting the registration process.
The press release quoted the UNHCR deputy representative in Pakistan Michael Zwack as saying: “This is an important achievement in the NWFP”.
It said that Afghans had seven more days to register at 44 selected registration centres and mobile vans in the country.
