DIG injured by robbers

LAHORE, Jan 7: Two unidentified people allegedly shot at and injured a senior police officer apparently in a robbery bid in Gulberg on Sunday night. Reports said two armed motorcyclists intercepted Mr Tassaduq Hussain, DIG, crimes branch, Punjab, at a park behind the UCH Hospital when he was taking a walk in civvies.

Police said the DIG who visited the park in his private car was alone at that time as he had asked his guards to stay in the vehicle.

Sources said the robbers demanded cash and cell phone at gunpoint. Mr Hussain handed them over his phone and wallet. The outlaw however opened fire when the DIG resisted body search. He received a bullet in his hip.

When his guards rushed to the spot after hearing the gunshot, the outlaws had fled. They shifted Mr Hussain to a hospital on Zafar Ali Road from where he was removed to the Mayo Hospital where his condition was stated to be out of danger.

The news of attack on Mr Hussain sent senior Punjab police officials in panic who were attending a wedding dinner at that time.

Sources said IGP Ahmed Naseem, CCPO Khalid Farooq, DIGs of operations and investigation wings reached the spot.

Meanwhile, two teams were constituted to arrest the culprits after the incident.

Mr Hussain was currently attending a staff course in Islamabad.

Meanwhile, robbers injured two people for putting up resistance in separate incidents and took away cash and valuables in several other hits in the city during the last 24 hours

A PIA employee, Muhammad Azeem, along with his sister-in-law, was returning by a car after withdrawing cash and jewellery from a bank situated on Zarar Shaheed Road in North Cantonment on Saturday evening when unidentified robbers intercepted them.

The outlaws snatched 15 tola gold jewellery and Rs70,000 from them and managed their escape.

Robbers intercepted Yaseen in Raiwind and deprived him of cash in thousands.

When he put up resistance, the robbers injured him and fled away.

Similarly, Faisal sustained bullet injuries while offering resistance when unidentified robbers tried to snatch cash and valuables from him in Manga Mandi area.

Two robbers intercepted Wali Muhammad outside his Ata Turk Block residence in Garden Town, depriving him of Rs70,000, a wrist watch and a costly cell phone.

Two armed people intercepted Attiq-ur-Rehman in Gujjarpura area and deprived him of cash in thousands and a cell phone at gunpoint.

Four robbers burst into the house of Dr Shoaib in Sabzazar, held up the inmates at gunpoint and took away cash and valuables worth Rs200,000.

Robbers intercepted Advocate Rizwan at Singhpura in Gujjarpura and deprived him of cash, a cell phone, a wristwatch and a jacket.

STOLEN: Four motorcycles were stolen, one each from Township, Iqbal Town, North Cantonment and Liaqatabad areas.

THEFT: A man deprived his neighbour of cash and valuables in Chungi Amar Siddhu area on late Saturday.

Police said Maqbool allegedly sneaked into Muhammad Boota’s house and collected Rs50,000 and other valuables.

In the meantime, the inmates got up and raised an alarm, but the accused fled.

GANG BUSTED: Baghbanpura and Hanjarwal police separately claimed on Sunday to have arrested six members of two gangs and recovered booty, besides illegal weapons, from them.

A team, headed by Baghbanpura SPO, nabbed Tariq alias Tarqi, Mustafa and Akbar of Tarqi gang and recovered 15 cell phones, jewellery and illegal weapons from their possession.

Another team, led by the Hanjarwal SPO, arrested Asif alias Asu and his two accomplices and seized a Toyota pick-up, cable worth millions of rupees, latest cutters and illegal weapons from them.
