Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, of Hamas' rival party Fatah, has threatened to call early elections if deadlocked negotiations with Hamas over the formation of a national unity government are not revived. The attack took place Saturday and targeted civilians in a vehicle near the village of Sirba, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state, AU spokesman Nureddin Mezni told AFP. "A remote control bomb struck their vehicle and killed all six people on board," police chief Abdul Hanan Raufi of Paktia province said, adding the bomb was detonated in Waja Mangal late Saturday. Separately at least two NATO-led troops were injured and vehicles were damaged Sunday when armed rebels attacked in southern Afghanistan. (Posted @ 18:34 PST) At least 26 killed in Iraq attacks BAGHDAD, Dec 10, (AFP) - At least 26 people were killed on Sunday in Iraq, including nine Shiites in sectarian attacks on two Baghdad families, a security official said. Another 17 corpses, three of them headless, were recovered by police in nothern Baghdad's Al-Hurriyah neighbourhood, the official added. In the attack on the families, gunmen broke into a home in the southwestern Jihad neighbourhood and killed five Shiite brothers, one of them a policeman, after separating them from their sisters, the official said. Second Russian hospital fire kills nine MOSCOW, Dec 10 (AFP) Up to nine people were killed and 16 injured by a fire Sunday in a psycho-neurological clinic in the town of Taiga in Siberia, Russia's second lethal hospital blaze of the weekend, the Interfax news agency reported. Of the total 223 patients that were at the site, "search is still on for 10. The incident followed a fire which swept through a Moscow drug rehabilitation clinic early Saturday, killing 45 women. "As a whole, I reject this report," he told journalists at his residence in Baghdad. "I think that the Baker-Hamilton report is not fair and not just, and it contains dangerous articles which undermine the sovereignty of Iraq and its consitution." (Posted @ 15:10 PST) Chinese troops arrive in Pakistan for first joint anti-terror exercises ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) Dozens of troops from China's People's Liberation Army arrived Sunday for joint anti-terrorism exercises with Pakistan's army, a military official said. It's the first time the People's Liberation Army of China has come to Pakistan for such exercises, according to an official at the military's Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to make media comments. The 10-day counterterrorism maneuvers will begin Monday in northwestern Pakistan, he said. The official did not provide further details. (Posted @ 14:10 PST) Civilians flee as rivals say 85 killed in Sri Lanka fighting COLOMBO, Dec 10, 2006 (AFP) Thousands of civilians were on the run Sunday in Sri Lanka's restive northeast after heavy artillery exchanges left over 85 people dead, according to the Tamil rebels and government forces. The defence ministry said that 1,450 displaced by the fighting in the district of Trincomalee were found temporary accommodation in schools, temples and public building in the neighbourhood. The ministry said that 40 Tamil Tiger rebels were killed and another 40 were wounded when troops retaliated against Tiger artillery attacks on Saturday. It said government forces lost two soldiers and that another 37 were wounded.
