Afghanistan may destabilise Pakistan, India: Armitage SINGAPORE, Nov 27 (Reuters) Failure to restore peace to Afghanistan may jeopardise stability in neighbouring Pakistan and have a knock-on effect on India, former U.S. deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage said on Monday. Calling on the international community to pay more attention to Afghanistan, Armitage said persistent violence in that country might wreck Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's efforts to defeat the forces of religious extremism at home. "I want to call your attention to Afghanistan. The stakes in Afghanistan are actually larger in the near term than they are in Iraq," said Armitage, speaking at a seminar for conflict mediators in Asia. Continued clashes in Afghanistan could also have knock-on effects on India, which may already perceive itself to be surrounded by failed or failing states such as Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, he said. British Defense Secretary says divided Iraq would threaten regional stability LONDON, November 27 (AP) A divided Iraq would threaten regional stability, British Defense Secretary Des Browne said Monday. ``Dividing Iraq into Sunni, Shia and Kurdish areas might appear seductive but it would not solve sectarian tensions,'' Browne said in an address to the Royal Institute of International Affairs. ``A divided Iraq would also threaten regional stability. Even without that division Iraq is vulnerable to becoming a crucible for wider regional tensions,” he said. (Posted @ 18:10 PST)

Israel failed to learn from US mistakes in Iraq: Armitage SINGAPORE, Nov 27 (AFP) Israel failed to learn from US mistakes in Iraq when it fought the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon, former US deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage said Monday. He said Israel conducted the 34-day July-August war "in a manner that was guaranteed to fail by trying to do it antiseptically from the air, instead of learning the lessons that we seem to have forgotten in Iraq, and that is that only a soldier with a bayonet" can bend an enemy's will. Delivering a keynote address at the start of the three-day gathering of mediators who have tried to resolve Asia's most intractable conflicts, Armitage said the United States could neither win nor lose militarily in Iraq. "We cannot want a success there more than Iraqis want a success. We can't want it for them, and it's over to them, now." (Posted @ 17:00 PST)
