Asif shines in polo contest

LAHORE, Nov 20: Four goals by Asif Tiwana supported by a half-goal handicap inspired Red Mountain to a stirring 6 1/2-6 win against Sherwood in the first round of the Future Concern polo cup on Monday.

The winners led the first chukker 1 1/2-1 as Asif drew first blood, converting a 30-yard penalty hit. Shahzad Aziz struck a field goal for Sherwood.

The losers came from behind to take a slim 4-3 1/2 lead in the second chukker.

Tanvir Tariq started with a field goal while back-to-back goals by Raja Sattar put Sherwood 4-1 1/2 ahead, before Asif came to rescue the winners, scoring two goals in a row.

Red Mountain took control of the match in the third chukker taking a solid 6 1/2-4 lead as Samee Ibrahim (2) and Asif (1) were the scorers.

Sherwood made a last attempt in the fourth chukker but could only come close (6 1/2-6) with Shahzad and Tanvir scoring one, each.

Four-goal Moin Yaqub inspired Nurpur to outclass Harvesters 9-2.

Besides Moin, the other scorers for the winners were Omar Niazi (2) Azam Hayat Noon (2) and Ahmad Zubair (1). Ali Hashim Rizvi struck twice for the losers.

In two chukkers, each match, Rangers lost both their matches.

First Addisseo defeated Rangers 4-1. Usman Hayee, Ali Riaz, Shahid Nawaz and Maqbool shared scoring honours for the winners. Keith scored consolation goal for Rangers. Cherat Cement also beat Rangers 2- 1/1. Imran Abid Mir and Shah Qubilai Alam scored for the winners. Rangers had half-goal handicap.
