KARACHI, Oct 20: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad here on Friday appealed to the Karachiites to supplement government efforts towards the eradication of mosquitoes so as to check the increasing cases of viral haemorrhagic fever in the city.
He said that simple but effective measures could help eradicate mosquitoes particularly Adias Aegypti type causing dengue.
He was talking to people during visit to various city areas late Thursday night. Personally driving the car, the governor on the third leg of his current city tour, visited Clifton, Jamia Cloth Market, other areas of the old city, Nazimabad and North Nazimabad.
He was accompanied by Transport Minister Adil Siddiqi, Adviser Waseem Akhtar, City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, DCO Fazlur Rehman, CCPO Niaz Siddiqi, DIG traffic and other officials.
Reminding that Adias Aegypti, is a black and white specific category of mosquitoes that breeds in clean water and bites during day time, the governor urged people to make sure that the stored water was properly covered and also ensure using it within a maximum of five to seven days.
Dr Ibad advised the citizens to keep their surroundings clean and make arrangements to get rid of stagnant water around their homes.
He urged people to sprinkle kerosene oil or even discarded mobil oil on puddles causing a screen and hampering further breeding of mosquitoes.
Assuring that fumigation will be streamlined and regulated across all the towns in Karachi, he also appealed to the owners of schools, offices, shops and people in general to initiate anti-mosquito spray themselves.
Masks and gloves must be used besides keeping body adequately covered; the governor said asking citizens to also ensure that they themselves and their children wear full sleeve shirts and trousers to avoid mosquito bite and should also used mosquito repellents.
To eliminate mosquitoes, specifically Adias Aegypti, Dr Ibad urged that water in flower vases must be changed on a daily basis after proper washing and drying of the utensil - finally filled with fresh water - plants must also be watered with due caution on a daily basis.
Referring to steps being taken in the wake of dengue fever, the governor emphasised that protective measures and public awareness in this regard were essential while the government was taking steps at its level.
He said the city government was specially focussing on the issue while the federal and provincial governments too were playing their part.
During the visit, the governor issued directives for the protection of open drain built to drain out rain water in Clifton. He observed that it could prove harmful for people coming to the Bazar in the absence of clear signs and barricades.
On the occasion the governor, besides Eid shopping and law and order, also reviewed the ongoing development works. While passing through various areas and bazars, Dr Ibad mingled with the public and had a direct dialogue with them.--APP
