Over 60 killed, scores injured in Iraq IRAQ, October 15, (Agencies) Militiamen in pickup trucks set up fake checkpoints on Saturday, killing at least 31 people in the town of Balad, 80 km north of Baghdad. Four car bombs, three of them suicide attacks, killed at least 10 people and wounded 60 shortly before midday in the northern oil city of Kirkuk, 250 km north of Baghdad, police said. Two car bombs exploded later in the day, wounding 14 people. Five people were killed, including three policemen, in Tal Afar when a man wearing a bomb vest detonated himself near a group of policemen walking in a street, police said. Police found the bodies of four people, with gunshot wounds and signs of torture, near Falluja. Three U.S. soldiers were killed on Saturday, when their vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb in southern Baghdad, the U.S. military said on Sunday. Gunmen stormed a house and killed three women and two men in the northern city of Mosul, police said. A roadside bomb targeting the convoy of a Finance Ministry official killed four civilians and wounded six, including the official's bodyguard, in eastern Baghdad, an Interior Ministry spokesman said. Clashes between gunmen and Iraqi police on Saturday night left three policemen wounded in an area between Baghdad and Kut, 170 km southeast of Baghdad, police said. Nine gunmen were also arrested. The body of a civilian was later found in the same area, police said. A roadside bomb wounded two civilians in eastern Baghdad, an Interior Ministry source said. Khan shifted to Islamabad after surgery KARACHI, Pakistan, Oct 15, (AFP) - Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, the founder of Pakistan's nuclear weapons programme, was moved to Islamabad Sunday weeks after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer, federal information minister Muhammad Ali Durrani said. Dr. Khan had been staying at his sister's home in Karachi after surgery at the Agha Khan hospital on September 9. Dr. Khan, who was at the centre of an international nuclear proliferation scandal involving North Korea, Libya and Iran, is still revered in military-ruled Pakistan as the "Father" of the Islamic world's first atomic bomb. The accident occurred late on Saturday in Raisen district, which lies adjacent to Bhopal where more than 3,500 people died in December 1984 after gas leaked from an Union Carbide pesticide plant into the city's atmosphere. Bus veers off mountain in northern India, killing 10 students and teachers LUCKNOW, India Oct 15 (AP) _ A bus carrying schoolchildren and teachers swerved off a steep mountain road and plunged into a gorge near Bageshwar, a small town in Uttaranchal state, Saturday night, killing at least 10 people, including six children, police said Sunday. Police in Khost province reported meanwhile that hundreds of rebels attacked a police checkpost near the border with Pakistan. "The fighting lasted from midnight to three in the morning. Three policemen were killed and one injured," a border police commander said. (Posted @ 14:05 PST) Pakistan registers Afghans for the first time ISLAMABAD, Oct 15 (AFP) - Pakistan began on Sunday to register Afghan refugees for the first time and to provide them with official identification during their temporary stay in the country. The government exercise, helped by the UN refugee agency, is a follow-up to the 2005 census of Afghans who fled to Pakistan after December 1, 1979 to escape the Soviet invasion of their homeland. "Only Afghans included in the census can take part in the registration," said Nayar Agha, the Chief Commissioner for Afghan Refugees in Islamabad. "For them, registration is mandatory and they will get a Proof of Registration (PoR) card at the end of it." The 10-week programme will be conducted through 90 centres supported by mobile registration vehicles across Pakistan. "More than 2.8 million Afghans have returned home from Pakistan since 2002. Another 2.5 million are believed to be still living in Pakistan," Indrika Ratwatte, the UNHCR's assistant Representative in Pakistan, said. "Starting next March, we will introduce new repatriation arrangements tied to the PoR card to help returnees in their area of origin," it said. The grenades, fired from a small hill in central Beirut, hit a building that houses offices, a bank branch and a nightclub in Riad el-Solh some 30 metres from the U.N. offices. Officials in Afghanistan said three other troops were wounded when they were attacked by rocket propelled grenades and small arms. Canadian authorities said two of its own were in stable condition with non-critical injuries.
