Musharraf discusses Afghanistan with Annan

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 20: President General Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday discussed the situation along the Afghan border with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on the sidelines of the 61st session of the UN General Assembly.

“It was a very good meeting,” the president told reporters after a 20-minute discussion in the UN chief’s office on the 38th floor, overlooking the East River.

The talks focused on the issue of terrorism, the situation in Afghanistan and the border region.

The president said that Mr Annan highly appreciated Pakistan’s well-coordinated response in the wake of the devastating October 8 earthquake.

The UN Under-Secretary-General for disaster relief, Jan Egeland, who was present at the meeting, said that Pakistan’s handling of the relief and reconstruction work in the aftermath of the earthquake was also discussed.

“Among the best in the world, Pakistan’s relief efforts are a model for other countries,” he said.—Dawn Report
