Meeting between President Musharraf, Indian PM Manmohan Singh starts HAVANA, Sep 16 (APP): The much awaited one-on-one meeting between President General Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has started here Saturday at a neutral venue on the sidelines of the NAM summit. The two leaders first met along with their aides. The President was assisted at the talks by Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri and Foreign Secretary Riaz Muhamad Khan. The Indian Prime Minister was assisted by his National Security Advisor and the Minister of State for External Affairs. They are now having one-on-one meeting, official sources said. A private tv station in Pakistan reported that the two leaders held hour-long talks on wide ranging issues. The talks were very positive and encouraging. It said that after the Musharraf-Singh meeting top officials of the two countries were engaged in drafting a joint statement which might be issued after the two leaders had met a second time later in the day. The statement may be released after mid-night, according to Pakistan Standard Time, the report said. It also quoted delegation sources saying that the talks were likely to lead to resumption of secretaries level talks which were due in July but were stalled as well as major initiatives in confidence building measures (CBMs) that has been the hallmark of peace negotiations between the two countries.(First Posted @ 20:30 PST Updated @ 21:44 PST)

Developing countries take aim at US in Non-Aligned meet in Cuba HAVANA, Sept 17 (AFP) - Developing-country leaders in the Non-Aligned Movement put finishing touches Saturday on initiatives aimed at countering US might, capping a summit in Havana that an ailing Fidel Castro sat out. Heads of state and government from more than 55 countries and delegates from a total of 118 were due to adopt a voluminous final declaration backing Iran's right to nuclear energy; urging UN reform to achieve greater weight for poor countries; and opposing what they see as US interventionism. Saudi demands 'urgent clarification' of pope's remarks RIYADH, Sept 16 (AFP) - The Saudi government demanded an "urgent clarification" of Pope Benedict XVI's remarks linking Islam and violence shortly before the Vatican issued an apology Saturday. In a letter from Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal to his Vatican counterpart, Riyadh said the pope's lecture during which the remarks were made adopted "the logic that was used to justify the Crusades waged against the Islamic world," the official SPA news agency reported. Pope 'extremely sorry' for offending Muslims: Vatican VATICAN CITY, Sept 16 (AFP) - Pope Benedict XVI is "extremely sorry" for offending Muslims in a speech this week in which he implicitly linked Islam and violence, the Vatican said on Saturday. Iraqi violence kills at least 11 people BAGHDAD, Sept 16 (AP) _ Three car bombings Saturday morning killed at least eight people and wounded another 25, officials said. Three more people were killed in shootings and other explosions, and police found six bodies strewn around the city. In Saturday's violence, a suicide car bomb targeting American and Iraqi vehicles in Baghdad neighborhood of Dora killed three Iraqis who were shopping in a market and wounded 19 others. In another incident, a car bomb detonated near Iraqi National Guard troops patrolling in downtown Baghdad near the Tigris River, killing two soldiers and wounding another, while another car bomb killed three police officers and wounded five people _ including three civilians _ when it detonated next to a passing patrol southeast Baghdad's Zafaraniya, police Capt. Ali Mahdi said. Two civilians were also shot to death in separate incidents while a civilian was killed and four were wounded after a roadside bomb exploded near an Iraqi police patrol in downtown Baghdad which has seen more than 160 people slain from Wednesday to Friday. North Korean slams US, says no talks while under US sanctions HAVANA, Sept 16 (AFP) - North Korea Saturday charged that the United States left it no option but to secure nuclear arms as a deterrent, and pledged that as long as it was hit by US sanctions it would not be back in talks. NATO-led forces kill 17 insurgents in Afghanistan strike KABUL, Sept 16 (AFP) - NATO-led troops used gunfire and bombs to strike a group of insurgents spotted laying bombs late Friday near a military base in southern Afghanistan, killing 17 rebels, the force said Saturday. "ISAF forces engaged the insurgents first by exchanging small arms fire, then by calling in close air support. Two small bombs were dropped on the insurgent positions," it said. Gunmen attack Gaza City church again GAZA CITY, Sept 16 (AFP) - Assailants angry at Pope’s comments on Islam opened fire on a church in Gaza City on Saturday, the second day of attacks directed at the building, according to witnesses. In a telephone call, a previously unknown group calling itself the Islamic Organization of the Swords of Righteousness claimed responsibility for unleashing a volley of gunfire on Gaza's oldest church. "We carried out this shooting because of the pope's statement and he must apologise," the caller said without giving his name. Leaders' arrests couldn't bar occupied Kashmir protests ISLAMABAD, Sep 16 (APP): Anti-India protest demonstrations were held across occupied Kashmir to condemn the stepped-up acts of human rights violations. Senior Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Gilani, and President of Democratic Freedom Party Shabbir Ahmed Shah were put under house-arrest whereas the Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League, Mussarrat Alam Butt was taken into custody yesterday. A protest demonstration was held at Khankahi in Srinagar. When the demonstrators reached near deputy commissioner's office Indian troops resorted to lathi charge and indiscriminate arrests, KMS reported. Kashmir Bar Association members also took out a protest rally from Lal Chowk to Regal Chowk in Srinagar. Freedom leader to be freed after 16 years ISLAMABAD, Sep 16 (APP): Indian Supreme Court quashed the order of draconian Public Safety Act (PSA) under which a Kashmiri youth Farooq Ahmed Dar has been in jail for the last 16 years. The court’s bench in New Delhi nullified the detention order under PSA against Farooq who had 22 fake FIRs registered against him by Indian military agencies. Dar was arrested in 1990 when he was only 17 and later acquitted in 2000 by a court but was not released by the puppet regime in occupied Kashmir. Meanwhile, in occupied Kashmir the high court quashed the detention orders of five Kashmiris under the draconian PSA and ordered immediate release of Ghulam Mohiuddin Malik of Baramulla, Shiraz Ahmad Chopan of Shopian, Mushtaq Ahmad Wani of Bandipora, Fayaz Ahmad Najar of Sopore and Nisar Ahmad Khanyar of Srinagar. Turkish PM says pope must apologize to Muslim world ANKARA, Sept 16 (AP) _ Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that Pope Benedict XVI must apologize to the Muslim world for his recent remarks on Islam, and cast some doubt on whether the pontiff's trip to Turkey would go ahead as planned. Gunbattles kill 6 suspected rebels, wound 2 policemen in occupied Kashmir SRINAGAR, occupied Kashmir, Sept 16 (AP) _ Three separate gun battles in occupied Kashmir killed at least six suspected militants and wounded two policemen on Saturday, police said. The Indian army's special forces shot and killed three suspects in a densely forested area of Gurwatan, 110 kilometers south of Srinagar. Earlier Saturday, police and the army cordoned off the village of Wahipora. Militants opened fire as troops converged on their hide-out. A gun battle left two suspected rebels dead and two policemen wounded. A spokesman claimed that the two militants belonged to Hezbul Mujahedeen, but there was no independent confirmation of the police claim. JKLF chief, 85 activists detained in Kupwara NEW DELHI, Sep 16 (APP): Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief Yasin Malik and 85 JKLF activists were detained in Kupwara district on Friday as they launched a court arrest programme against human rights violations in occupied Kashmir. Police swung into action, as the activists took to the streets after Friday prayers shouting slogans against human rights abuses, and took into preventive custody Malik and 85 others at Handwara Chowk in Kupwara, officials said. Besides Malik, those detained include JKLF leaders Sheikh Abdul Rashid, Ghulam Rasool Dar Eidi, Tajamul, Mohammad Aslam and Abdul Hamid Lone, they added. Thousands demonstrate against Pope in Gaza City GAZA, Sept 16 (Reuters) Several thousand Palestinians marched in the Gaza Strip Friday to protest against comments made by Pope Benedict about Islam in a speech in Germany Tuesday, where he appeared to endorse a view that the early Muslims spread their religion by violence.
