EU leader lauds Pakistan for curbing terrorism, extremism BRUSSELS, Sept.13 (APP): President of the European Parliament, Josep Borrell Fontelles Wednesday lauded Pakistan's efforts to improve ties with India, its front-line role in the anti-terror campaign and acknowledged the strategy the country has adopted to deal with extremism and curb Taliban militant activities in the tribal region. Speaking to reporters with President General Pervez Musharraf after over an hour long meeting, also attended by the Conference of Presidents, Fontelles also appreciated Pakistan's achievements in economic and other areas."We welcome President Musharraf who is on first ever visit to EU Parliament, we convened this meeting with the President because of the great interest the members of the Parliament have in Pakistan," he said. President assures sustained gas, power supply to foreign investors BRUSSELS, Sept.13 (APP):President General Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday assured foreign investors to fully meet energy requirements of their industries in Pakistan on sustained basis and invited Belgian investors to benefit from the country's liberal economic policies, skilled manpower, improved law and order, and cheap labour, making it an ideal investment destination. Baghdad police find 66 corpses; bomb blasts kill 35, injure 70 BAGHDAD, Sept 13 (AFP) - Police recovered 66 bullet-riddled corpses from the capital as two car bombs in Baghdad killed 28 people and wounded scores more on Wednesday. A security official said most of the bodies were found in western parts of the capital, which houses some of the violent districts and neighbourhoods such as Mansur, Ameriyah and Yarmuk with mixed population of Sunnis and Shiites. On Wednesday, Baghdad was also hit by two car bombs that left another 28 people dead and scores more wounded. In the deadliest attack, rebels killed 20 people and wounded 51 others in a car bomb attack against a police patrol in east Baghdad, an interior ministry spokesman said. "Five of those killed were policemen," he said. In another similar attack, eight people were killed and 19 wounded when insurgents blew up a parked car loaded with explosives near two police patrols in eastern Baghdad. The dead include three policemen. A series of mortar bomb attacks also left a civilian dead, while two bystanders were killed when gunmen attempted to kidnap the owner of a foreign exchange outlet in west Baghdad. Suicide attacker only victim in bombing in Afghan mosque KANDAHAR, Sept 13 (AP) _ A suicide attacker detonated explosives inside Saidon Mosque in Kandahar on Wednesday, killing just himself and causing no other casualties, police said. Israel encroaching Lebanese territory with new barbed-wire barrier BEIRUT, Sept 13 (AP) _ U.N. peacekeepers Wednesday asked Israel's army to pull down a new barbed-wire barrier that Beirut said encroached on its territory, a U.N. spokesman said. Saddam prosecutor demands trial judge resign BAGHDAD, Sept 13 (AFP) - The prosecutor in the genocide trial of Saddam Hussein Wednesday demanded the chief judge resign, saying he was too lenient with defendants who had threatened lawyers and witnesses. Presiding judge Abdullah al-Ameri dismissed the demand. Prime Minister Aziz inaugurates Torkhum-Jalalabad Road in Afghanistan Jalalabad, Sept 13 (PPI):Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Wednesday reiterated Pakistan believed that ``strong, stable and vibrant'' Afghanistan, was good for its people, its neighbours, peace and progress of the world. Inaugurating the 75 kilometres Torkham –Jalalabad road at a ceremony alongwith Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the visiting prime minister said relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan are``multi-faceted and we are together with common faith of Islam.'' The road has been constructed by Pakistan's Frontier Works Organisation in a record time of 13 months at a cost of over two billion rupees for people of Afghanistan. Police kill 16 Taliban in southern Afghanistan< KANDAHAR, Sept 13 (AP) _ Police killed 16 Taliban fighters during a fierce gun battle Wednesday in a mountainous area outside the Helmand provincial town of Garmser, an official said. The battle started late Tuesday. 4 Afghan police, 4 militants killed in western Afghan clash< KABUL, Sept 13 (AP) _ Militants wearing Afghan security forces uniforms ambushed a police patrol in Farah province,sparking a clash that killed four police and four insurgents Wednesday, an official said. Rival security forces clash on Chechen border, seven dead GROZNY, Russia, Sept 13 (AFP) - A chaotic clash between Russian-backed Chechen special forces and traffic police in neighbouring Ingushetia on Wednesday left at least seven dead and numerous wounded, police sources said.The bloodshed started when Ingush traffic police halted a column of Chechen paramilitary police at the border of the two provinces near the town of Sliptsovsk. Over 1.2 million cluster bombs fired at Lebanon: report JERUSALEM, Sept 13 (AFP) - Israel's army fired more than 1.2 million cluster bombs into Lebanon during the month-long conflict, the liberal Haaretz newspaper reported Wednesday citing a senior Israeli army officer who termed it as "crazy and monstrous." "We covered entire villages with cluster bombs," the newspaper quoted the commander as saying. The 1.2 million cluster bombs cited by the commander only included those bomblets fired by a Multiple Launch Rocket System. Blair presses US over inmates' rights in Guantanamo LONDON, Sept 13 (AFP) - The US government must ensure that prisoners in Guantanamo Bay are subject to proper judicial procedures in a way that guarantees national security, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Wednesday. Blair, addressing a press conference with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, did not reply directly to a reporter who asked if he would call for the prison's closure after a British minister strongly denounced it. "They've got to make sure that people there are subject to a proper judicial process but in a way obviously that also protects security as well," Blair said. British minister condemns "shocking" Guantanamo Bay SYDNEY, Sept 13 (AFP) – Britain’s de facto justice minister, Lord Chancellor Charles Falconer, Wednesday condemned the Guantanamo Bay prison camp as a "shocking affront to the principles of democracy." In a speech before Australian senators, MPs, judges and academics at the Australian Supreme Court he said the camp for suspects in the "war on terror" flaunted the rule of law, which required that courts have power over governments. "It is because of that principle that the USA, deliberately seeking to put the detainees beyond the reach of the law in Guantanamo Bay, is so shocking an affront to the principles of democracy.
