Gold mine closure in Ghana

LONDON, Sept 6: AngloGold Ashanti, a subsidiary of global mining giant Anglo American, warned on Wednesday that it might be forced to shut one of its gold mines in Ghana owing to restrictions on use of the country's electricity.

The Ghanaian government last month required the mining industry to cut its electricity consumption by 25 per cent because of a serious water shortage that reduced the country's power generating capacity. In a statement released on Wednesday, AngloGold said the Iduapriem mine faced closure should the government decide to cut further the use of Ghana's electricity.—AFP
