Four US soldiers could face death penalty for killing Iraqi detainees WASHINGTON, Sept 3, (AFP) - Four US soldiers could face execution for allegedly killing three Iraqi detainees after an Army investigator recommended they be tried on charges of murder and conspiracy, US media reported Sunday. The four, who were arrested in June, stand accused of killing three men during a May raid near the Muthana Chemical Complex in Salaheddine province. The Los Angeles Times and Washington Post, which obtained copies of the recommendation from Lieutenant James Daniel, reported that he found that the four intentionally killed the prisoners and conspired to cover up the murders by saying the men tried to escape. Two soldiers died when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb at around 6:20 am in east Baghdad on Sunday. The military also announced the deaths of two marines in Al-Anbar province. NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) would not confirm the nationalities of the soldiers, whom the Afghan defence ministry said were Canadians. "Four ISAF soldiers were killed during today’s operations and seven others were wounded. Six of the seven wounded are expected to return to their duties within the next few days," ISAF said in a statement. More than 200 Taliban fighters had also been killed since Operation Medusa was launched in the Panjwayi district of southern Kandahar province early Saturday, it said. Khalis, 80 km north of Baghdad, has been the scene of recent sectarian violence. Exactly a week ago, a bomb exploded inside a food market in Khalis and in the evening gunmen stormed the market in attacks that killed more than 20 people and wounded dozens.
