DHAKA, Aug 29: The High Court of Bangladesh on Tuesday ordered the authorities concerned to revoke the judicial powers of a sessions judge who sentenced an innocent man to death.

The court also ordered the home secretary to take stern action against the head of a police station who brought charges against Shah Alam Babu in place of the criminal.

The court gave the orders in a judgment on an appeal against the trial court’s verdict in the murder case of one Gazi Liaqat Hossain.

The judge concerned, Shamsul Islam Khan, sentenced to death three persons, including Shah Alam Babu, for the murder of Liaqat Gazi in 1998.

The murdered manís widow and two eyewitnesses testified to the innocence of Shah Alam Babu, saying that the investigating officer had framed him rather than the ‘actual criminalí, Sundar Babu, to satisfy a personal grudge.

Shah Alam Babu appealed the verdict in the High Court. The court concluded that he was not the murderer and ordered his release.
