Roddick marches into final

CINCINNATI (Ohio), Aug 20: Andy Roddick outgunned Chilean 13th seed Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 6-3 to reach the Cincinnati Masters Series event final on Saturday.

The American ninth seed hammered down 12 aces to set up a clash with unseeded Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, a repeat of the 2003 US Open final, won by Roddick.

Roddick broke Gonzalez in the opening game of the match and one more break gave him the set.

Gonzalez, appearing in his third Masters Series semi-final of 2006, upped his game in the second set but double-faulted to hand Roddick the break in the eighth game and the American served out to love for victory.

Ferrero defeated fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-4 in the other semi-final.

Saturday’s results:

Semi-finals: 9-Andy Roddick (US) beat 13-Fernando Gonzalez (Chile) 6-3, 6-3; Juan Carlos Ferrero (Spain) beat 7-Tommy Robredo (Spain) 6-3, 6-4.

HINGIS IN FINAL

MONTREAL: Former world No 1 Martina Hingis, who will return to the top 10 when the WTA rankings are released on Monday, reached the final of the Rogers Cup on Saturday.

Hingis's run to the semi-finals, along with the second-round ouster of 11th-ranked Russian Anastasia Myskina and the withdrawal of No 10 American Lindsay Davenport, insured Hingis would rise from the No 12 spot where she started the week.

Hingis reached the final on Saturday when Russian Anna Chakvetadze withdrew from their semi-final clash with a right forearm strain.

At the time Hingis held a 6-3, 3-1 lead over her opponent, who had taken two medical timeouts for treatment of an injury that was plainly hindering her.

Hingis, seeded seventh, had to wait until Sunday to learn her final opponent after rain forced officials to suspend play in the second semi-final between ninth-seeded Russian Dinara Safina and No 13 Ana Ivanovic of Serbia & Montenegro.

Ivanovic had won the first set 6-1 and Safina led the second 4-3 when play was halted.

Results:

Semi-finals: 7-Martina Hingis (Switzerland) beat Anna Chakvetadze (Russia) 6-3, 3-1 – Chakvetadze retired; 13-Ana Ivanovic (Serbia & Montenegro) leads 9-Dinara Safina (Russia) 6-1, 3-4.—Agencies
