Flood: KKH blocked, 10 houses collapse

By Our Correspondent

GILGIT, Aug 12: Flash floods destroyed at least 10 houses in the Sakwar village here on Friday night, police sources said.

Traffic on the Karakoram Highway between Gilgit and Rawalpindi and Gilgit and China was suspended as the road was struck by landslides and boulders, caused by floods, at various points in Sakwar, Hunza, Gonar Farm, Chilas and Thore Nallah, said the Frontier Works Organisation. FWO workers were trying to clear the KKH.

At least 60 cattle in different areas and 400 chickens in a farm in Danyore also perished in the floods.

The sources said landslides near the Gopis area had also blocked a road between Gahkuch and Chitral.

There have been no PIA flights from Islamabad to Gilgit for two days because of bad weather conditions.
