India-BD border tense

DHAKA, Aug 12: Tension gripped border areas of Bangladesh, particularly at the northern frontier in Sylhet, on Saturday as both Bangladeshi and Indian troops increased vigilance after last week’s clashes.

The chief of the Bangladesh Rifles flew to Sylhet on Saturday to hold an emergency meeting with officials at the frontier.

Around 20,000 panic-stricken people have fled their villages in the wake of the clashes.

Veena Sikri, the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, on Saturday blamed the Bangladeshi media for the escalation, saying that they had fuelled the tension by exaggerating the Indian Border Security Force’s role in the hostilities.
