KARACHI: City nazim to get more powers: governor

KARACHI, Aug 4: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has said that President Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz have taken notice of the problems emerging due to separate jurisdictions of various agencies and organisations in Karachi.

Talking to newsmen here on Friday, he said it had been decided to assign a leading role to the City District Government Karachi for an improved coordination among different agencies and organisations in the city with enhancement in the powers of city nazim.

Earlier, the governor inspected the drainage system at Clifton underpass and Bath Island and expressed his satisfaction over the measures being taken to cope with the situation arising out of the flooding following rains.

He noted that the situation had been brought under control in a short period of time, the roads around the Clifton underpass site was reopened to traffic and alternative arrangements were made for draining out water from Bath Island.

He gave 10-12 hours to the officials concerned to ensure disposal of the remaining stagnant water at various places.

Various officials at the site told the governor that there were some technical flaws in the system installed at the Clifton underpass.

In Bath Island, the governor’s motorcade had to pass through knee-deep water near railway line. The governor came out of his car and waded through the muddy stagnant water to inspect the work being carried out on a temporary drain.

City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal briefed him about the ongoing cleaning operation.
