Pakistan asks UN, major powers to immediately intervene to end Israeli attacks in Lebanon ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, July 22 (AP) _ President General Parvez Musharraf asked the United Nations and other major powers on Saturday to immediately intervene to end the ongoing fighting between Israel and Hezbollah militia in Lebanon, the foreign ministry said. He made the demand at a meeting to discuss the situation in the Middle East with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and other government officials, as Israeli tanks and troops rumbled into southern Lebanon, the ministry said in a statement. At Saturday's meeting, Musharraf again expressed his ``deep concern over the escalating crisis and violence'' and ``the increasing hardship and suffering of the Lebanese people,'' the statement said. It said the meeting also urged the Organization of Islamic Countries ``to respond urgently and effectively to demonstrate its solidarity and support to Lebanon and to consider measures to bring the Israeli aggression to an end.'' Pakistani militants extend ceasefire after talks MIRANSHAH, Pakistan, July 22 (Reuters) - Pro-Taliban militants extended a ceasefire with Pakistani forces for another month on Saturday to give more time for tribal elders to broker peace in a restive tribal region, officials said. The truce was extended after a series of talks, under a jirga or traditional council, between elders and government officials with militants. "The talks were successful and will continue for the period of the ceasefire to restore peace in North Waziristan," tribal elder and lawmaker, said Maulana Nek Zaman, who has been mediating between the government and militants. Malik Nasrullah Khan, a tribal leader and jirga member, said he hoped the ceasefire would hold permanently. Militant groups in Gaza agree to stop firing missiles at Israel GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip, July 22 (AP) _ Militant groups in the Gaza Strip have agreed to stop firing missiles at Israel at midnight Saturday (2100 GMT), senior Palestinian officials said. The unilateral cease-fire is aimed at ending an Israeli offensivein the Gaza Strip that began on June 28, the officials said on condition of anonymity because the agreement was reached at a closed meeting. Taliban fighting with more sophistication: US-led coalition KABUL, July 22 (AFP) - The US military here admitted Saturday that Taliban rebels were fighting with improved control over their forces and more "sophistication" as they ramp up their battle against Afghan and international troops. The extremist movement was fighting "very hard," US-led coalition spokesman Colonel Thomas Collins said. "We're seeing the enemy conduct some operations that show ... a higher level of sophistication from previous battles," the US colonel told a regular news briefing in Kabul. "And we're seeing the enemy operate in larger formation with a better ability to command and control their forces," he said. Collins said weapons seized from killed and captured militants indicated they had new arms, although these were only light weapons such as machine-guns and rocket-propelled grenades. Thousands prepare to rally across Britain against Israeli offensive LONDON, July 22 (AFP) - "Peace for Lebanon!" rang the chant of thousands of protestors who took to the streets of London Saturday in one of several rallies across Britain against Israel's offensive in the Middle East. Waving Lebanese and Palestinian flags and banging drums the demonstrators demanded an immediate end to the Jewish state's bombardment of Lebanon and Gaza. They also called on British Prime Minister Tony Blair to end what they described as his support of the Israeli attacks and demanded that he join international calls for an immediate ceasefire. The London march was set to pass in front of the US embassy and on to Hyde Park for a rally. Flintoff ruled out for rest of the season LONDON, July 22 (AFP) - England captain Andrew Flintoff has been ruled out for some 12 weeks after being told on Saturday that he needs surgery on his injured left ankle, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced. Israeli strikes kill four civilians in Lebanon RASHAYA, Lebanon, July 22 (AFP) - Four civilians were killed and seven others were wounded on Saturday in Israeli raids on various locations in Lebanon, including transmission towers that downed television and telephone networks, police said. A Hezbollah fighter was killed in action, and an employee of the LBCI television station was killed and another wounded when Israeli military hit transmission towers at three locations. Mobile telephone networks were down in the north of Lebanon after the strikes while local television transmission for LBCI was cut in the north and in Kesrwan mountains, although people could still view channel on satellite. Television transmission towers, including Hezbollah's Al-Manar and the privately run New TV, and mobile telephone masts were also destroyed in Terbol in northern Lebanon, police added. A man and his wife were killed while four relatives were wounded in an Israeli air strike on their car near the southern port city of Tyre, police said. A Lebanese man was killed and his two children wounded in an Israeli bombardment on a village in southeast Lebanon, police said. On Saturday, two Lebanese army soldiers also died from wounds inflicted in an Israeli strike on a Beirut suburb on July 17. Saturday's deaths raises to 352 the number of people killed in Lebanon since Israel launched its military onslaught on the country. MC bags seven, PPP one out of eight reserved seats in AJK LA MUZAFFARABAD, July 22 (APP): In the elections on eight reserved seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly, All Jammu Muslim conference Saturday bagged seven seats, while Pakistan People's Party Azad Kashmir secured one seat. With the completion of elections on the eight reserve seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly, the house of 49 members has been completed. The 41 newly elected legislatures exercised their vote to fill the eight reserved seats, a press release said. In the elections on general seats held on July 11, Muslim Conference had secured 21 seats. Later, three independents also joined the Muslim Conference and its strength rose to 24 out of 41 members. U.S. rushes precision-guided bombs to Israel BEIRUT, July 22 (AFP) - Israel massed thousands more reservists on the Lebanese border on Saturday, warning it would not rule out a full-scale invasion as The New York Times reported the United States is rushing delivery of precision-guided bombs to Israel. Israel's request for rush delivery of the satellite- and laser-guided bombs was an indication that Israel still had a long list of targets to strike in Lebanon, the paper said. Israel said its aircraft had hit 150 targets inside Lebanon in the 24 hours to Saturday morning, including a dozen roads linking Lebanon to neighbouring Syria as well as suspected Hezbollah positions. Lebanon has said its army is ready to go into battle if Israel invades. "The Lebanese army will resist and defend the country and prove that it is an army worthy of respect," said Defence Minister Elias Murr, whose forces have so far stood on the sidelines of the conflict. "It's going to be a serious escalation" if Israel invades southern Lebanon, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan told CNN television. Iraq announces peace plan without foreign interference BAGHDAD, July 22 (AFP) - Iraq's president and prime minister announced the formation of a 30-member commission Saturday to promote national reconciliation, even as the speaker of parliament said coalition forces should leave the country. Hezbollah using Viet Cong-style defences: Jane's LONDON, July 21, 2006 (APP/AFP) - Hezbollah is proving a tough opponent for Israel because of their Viet Cong-style network of tunnels in southern Lebanon, the authoritative Jane's Defence Weekly magazine said Friday. PM directs increase in non-practice allowance of doctors ISLAMABAD, Jul 22 (APP): Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has approved substantial increase in the non-practicing allowance of doctors serving in the federal government. This will be raised from Rs. 500 per month to Rs. 4,000 per month for doctors in BS-17 and BS-18 and from Rs. 700 to Rs. 6,000 per month for doctors in BS-19 and BS-20. President for modernizing education curricula RAWALPINDI, July 22 (APP): President General Pervez Musharraf on Saturday underscored the need for making the education curricula in the country in conformity with the advancements in modern-day science and technology. In his remarks at a review meeting of draft curricula of major subjects from classes one to twelve the President said it was also important that the presentation of the subjects be made interesting and special care be exercised so that revised text are free from all sorts of syntax, typographical and other errors. Hizbollah rockets hit northern Israel, 10 injured JERUSALEM, July 22 (Reuters) - At least 10 rockets fired by the Lebanese guerrilla group Hizbollah hit towns across northern Israel on Saturday, injuring 10 people and damaging two houses, medics and the army said. Scores killed across Iraq BAGHDAD, July 22 (AP) _ Seven workers were gunned down Saturday in west Baghdad, and explosions rattled the heart of the Iraqi capital. Two workers were wounded in addition to those who died in a drive-by shooting about noon in the Furat neighborhood near Baghdad International Airport, police Lt. Maitham Abdul-Razzaq said. Earlier Saturday, two large blasts _ both in east Baghdad _occurred at midmorning about 20 minutes apart. One civilian was killed in the blasts which targeted an Iraqi police patrol. The other explosion at the Rasheed military camp caused no casualties. Elsewhere, three people were killed and five were injured in a bombing and shooting in the main market in Baqouba. In Mosul, gunmen attacked a joint U.S.-Iraqi base with rocket-propelled grenades and mortar fire Saturday, followed by a suicide car bombing, police Lt. Col. Abdul-Karim Khalaf said. There were no reports of casualties. One civilian was killed in the crossfire when masked gunmen attacked Iraqi police in east Mosul, and three gunmen died in a firefight with police in the north of the city, Khalaf said.Curfew was imposed Saturday on the city of Samarra after a bodyguard of the city council chairman detonated an explosives belt, injuring the chairman and another security officer, police said. An Iraqi soldier was killed Saturday when a bomb exploded at the entrance to his home in Hillah, 95 kilometers south of Baghdad, police said. Six people were wounded Saturday when a bomb exploded at the central bus station in Musayyib, about 60 kilometers south of the capital, according to hospital authorities.``The situation with sectarian violence in Baghdad is very serious,'' Gen. John P. Abizaid, head of the U.S. Central Command, said in an interview Friday with The New York Times. ``The country can deal with the insurgency better than it can with the sectarian violence, and it needs to move decisively against the sectarian violence now.'' 13 Taliban killed in sweep of southern Afghan district KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, July 22, 2006 (AFP) Afghan and coalition forces Saturday kept up a hunt for rebels who briefly captured two southern districts last week, killing 13 Taliban in the latest strikes, an official said. Israeli incursions a few kilometres into Lebanon JERUSALEM, July 22 (Reuters) Israeli forces are carrying out limited incursions a few kilometres inside southern Lebanon, an army spokesman said on Saturday. Britain tells Israel of risks of Lebanon invasion LONDON, July 22 (Reuters) Israel should exercise extreme caution when deciding whether to invade Lebanon, Britain's foreign secretary said. In an interview with the Financial Times published on Saturday, Margaret Beckett spoke of the "very dangerous situation" in Lebanon and said "a miscalculation, a mistake could have dramatic effects". "This is a very dangerous situation: this could be a turning point, and we must in the international community try and do everything we can to make sure it's a turning point for the better," Beckett added.
